House of the Dragon has made sure to portray Aegon II as the flawed prince he truly was in the books. He raped and impregnated many innocent women and fathered countless illegitimate children – something House of the Dragon characters reprimand and judge Rhaenyra for but overlook Aegon during their judgment.
Being crowned as a king comes with its burdens but as seen in episode 9, that emotion has now turned into one of exaltation and egotistic grandness. Aegon’s rise as King spells trouble for the House of Dragon as it might be the first nail in the Tagaryens’ coffin.
But back to Aegon’s “bastards,” I want to particularly focus on one child singled out in episode 9. The pale-haired boy mentioned as Aegon’s bastard by Ser Erryk may or may not be of Aegon’s blood. But we might have an accurate guess of his identity and his importance in House of the Dragon upcoming seasons.
Gaemon Palehair, aged four at the beginning of the Dance of Dragons, same as the child teased in House of the Dragon, was one of Aegon II’s most prominent illegitimate spawns.
While the comparison seems a little farfetched, the prospect of House of the Dragon introducing Gaemon and including him in the story makes sense. The boy was adopted by the women of House of Kisses and brought up as the house’s king. A just and benevolent Lord, Gaemon proved an essential ally to Rhaenyra in a time of great need.
The Lord of Kisses even went on to be a beloved companion of Aegon III after the future king lost his mother and his brother. But Gaemon Palehair’s end was depressing as he and his wife were poisoned, and only the young queen survived.
Gaemon was the most influential of the Aegon’s children who rose to higher ranks without their father’s help. If House of the Dragon were to add him to the story, Rhaenyra and her children would gain a strong ally, and the show will also stick to the book.
House of the Dragon brings a new episode to HBO Max every Sunday.
