In Hogwarts Legacy, there’s a super interesting arc with Slytherin student, Sebastian Sallow, who has strayed on the dark path looking for a cure for his cursed sister. It all goes sideways when Sallow kills his uncle Solomon using Avada Kedavra, believing him to be responsible for his sister’s fate.
During the “In the Shadow of Fate” quest, Ominis will reveal this information to you and ask you to make a choice: Either turn Sebastian in to the Ministry of Magic or keep his secret and let him go free.
I’m sure you’re wondering what choice you should make?
If players have already learned the Unforgivable curses, they can report Sebastian Sallow. If they haven’t learned it yet, it is better to let Sebastian Sallow go free. There are no major consequences to the player for either choice.
So yes, this sure can come across as a moral quandary but gameplay wise it doesn’t really affect the narrative all that much. Let’s look into what the consequence for each decision is and whether or not there’s a “right” decision here.
Consequences of Turning Sebastian Sallow In
If you turn Sebastian Sallow in, he will be arrested and taken to the Ministry of Magic. He won’t be present in the ending and will be replaced by Ominis.
There are no major consequences as such to either of the decisions. If you report Sebastian, he will be arrested which automatically means he won’t be present for the cut-scenes in the end.
Besides this, you also won’t get a second chance to learn the unforgivable spells or complete any quests that he’s part of.
Consequences of Letting Sebastian Sallow Go Free
If you let Sebastian Sallow go free, he will appear in the ending cut-scene where he will express remorse for killing his uncle. Here, you will be able to give him important information about his sister.
If you choose not to report Sebastian, you’ll get another chance to learn the unforgivable curses as well as complete all the quests.
The most important reward would be seeing him again at the end of the game, where he confesses how he regrets killing his uncle. At this point, you too have uncovered some vital information about his sister which you can finally share with him!
Personally, I prefer this choice more — it makes the story more dynamic and even gives your player a little edge.
What is the “right” choice?
There is no right choice while deciding to turn Sebastian Sallow in or not, as players don’t suffer any major consequences other than minor changes to the storyline.
Turning in someone who has used an Unforgivable curse might seem like a big deal. But keeping your player’s role in mind, this isn’t as morally loaded as you may think. In fact, because your player is the protagonist, they themselves can use Unforgivable curses with little to no consequences.
In that case, the decision of turning in Sebastian only matters from a gaming strategy point of view: Only through Sebastian can players learn the three unforgivable curses. If you haven’t learned them yet, turning him in means you won’t get another chance to learn them.
Earlier in the game, Sebastian will offer you a chance to learn these spells. My advice would be to learn them as they will come in handy every now and then. However, if players refuse to learn them at the first point, they will be offered a second chance during the latter half of the game — only if, they decide not to report Sebastian.
Some folks think that this decision may contribute to your player either becoming a “good” or an “evil” wizard, but that crossroad only comes at the end of the game, not in this quest.
The game has not given any indications about how important Sebastian may be to the sequels. It’s possible in future games, storylines can be affected based on whether or not you turned Sebastian in. So, you could try to keep that in mind while playing as well.
But as far as Hogwarts Legacy itself is concerned, there are no further repercussions irrespective of the decision you make.
