His Dark Materials returned to HBO Max with the two-part premiere of season 3 this week, and boy, are we excited for the final season. Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of the same name, the fantasy-drama series pulls out the big guns with Authority and Metatron as the ultimate baddies as Lyra’s adventure draws to an end.
The two episodes mainly focused on Asriel’s efforts to understand the Dust better while killing every angel that stands between him and his answers, Will journeys to Lyra’s world to save her from Mrs. Coulter’s imprisonment, and explain Authority’s diminishing power and the rise of Metatron.
By the end of episode 2, Will succeeds in his rescue mission, but all battles have a cost, and they lose the Æsahættr when Will shatters it while making their escape. What’s worse, now Asriel can keep an eye on his daughter and her companion.
One of Asriel’s little spy steps into the other world with Will and Lyra, making them vulnerable to his master and incapable of hiding. And though Lyra is away from her parents, their short union can only mean things will take a darker turn for the young girl and the fight against the Authority. Though their motives differ, we can bet Asriel will use Lyra and her mother to guarantee that his vision turns into reality.
Asriel’s disdain and devil may care attitude towards his family and his focus on his vision ensure he will be one of the key characters in the last season. He will go to any lengths, sacrifice every angel if he must, to reach the ones on the top and eradicate their rule for his own selfish reasons.
What we can expect in the coming episodes is Lyra and Will trying to understand the vision Lyra had of Roger and how to save him from the land of the dead without jeopardizing their mission. They also have another added task on hand after episode 2’s ending, which is fixing the knife that cuts their path into different worlds.
If you’ve read Pullman’s trilogy, you’d know only one bear is capable of willing any metal to his will, and that’s Iorek Byrnison. But considering they just shut the portal behind them with Iorek stuck on the opposite side, that quest will be more challenging than expected.
His Dark Materials will return to HBO Max next week with two new episodes and a deeper look into Lyra and Will’s last adventure.
