In Episode 3, a tragedy happened in Hinamizawa when Rena and Keiichi stabbed each other to death. Later, after being shocked by the incident, Rika committed suicide.
Earlier in the episode, Rena suspected Keiichi to know everything as she heard him talking to Ooishi about her.
Rena got a perfect opportunity to get Keiichi out of the frame when his mom called her to make his dinner. She went to his house, and the tragedy happened.

1. Episode 4 Preview & Speculation
Since Keiichi never really said how Rena killed, it’s pretty clear that everything Rena believed was a big misunderstanding that ended up deciding their fate.
We also got confirmation that Rika and Satoko did not die on the same night. Satoko also said later in the episode that Rika has to die first to allow Satoko to give chase by hounding her loops.
The question is whether the new Rika would be able to take advantage of the situation, especially without being aware of Satoko’s involvement from a prior loop?
It will be interesting to see if it’s Shion or Mion that Satoko will inject in Watadamashi. Some fans theorize that it’s traditionally Shion, and Mion is the only one to have never killed anybody. However, more proofs are needed to confirm this theory.
Also, the more the anime proceeds, it looks like the last season ‘Gou’ was almost all question arcs, and ‘Sotsu’ will be answer arcs where we follow the killer. Hence, it’s clear that we’re now off to Watadamashi-hen’s Answer Arc.

Episode 4 of the Higurashi: When They Cry – Sotsu (2021) anime, titled “Cotton-Revealing Chapter, Part 1”, has been released on Thursday, Jul 15, 2021.
Since this anime runs on a weekly schedule, new episode releases are seven days apart.

3. Episode 3 Recap
Rena digs the ground with a shovel on the night of June 15, 1983. She kicks the bags containing Rina’s body parts into the dug hole while panting heavily.
Suddenly, she turns to look behind her with a frightened face and finds the bushes moving.
The following day, Rena enters the hallway and sees Keiichi washing his hands. She listens to him murmuring that he never believed Rena could get someone killed. Rena is shocked to hear this but fixes up her face and offers Keiichi her handkerchief.
That night, Rena goes up to the place she buried Rina and digs the ground again. She is happy to see that the bags are still there. She prays to Oyashiro-sama, the guardian deity of Hinamizawa, to let her family free of the curse.
Three days later, after enjoying the festival together, Rena watches Keiichi walking back home and wonders how much of it did Keiichi see.
The next day at school, Rena looks at Keiichi leaving with the police officer, who also questioned her earlier. Suddenly, Satoko shows up and asks what happened to her neck after noticing the red mark of a hand. Rena shakes it off by saying it’s just itching.
Later that day, Rena visits Keiichi in his house. However, on hearing Keiichi talking to Ooishi about her, she turns blue and runs out of his house. She returns home but goes to his house again on receiving a call from Keiichi’s mother requesting to make his dinner.
She packs all the tools in bento boxes and heads to his home. However, Keiichi doesn’t open the door for her. Meanwhile, Rika watches this from a corner and recalls Keiichi telling her that he is sometimes afraid of Rena.
Finally, Keiichi opens the door and lets Rena in. On seeing this, Rika is relieved as she thinks they are getting well. At the same time, inside the house, Keiichi and Rena stab each other mercilessly.
The following morning, the homeroom teacher informs the class that Keiichi is in hospital and Rena is dead. This leaves everyone in shock, especially Rika. She walks up to a house in the forest and slits open her throat with a knife.
Satoko arrives there sometime later to make sure that Rika is dead and says that Rika will continue to face the wrath of Oyashiro’s curse in the afterlife.
