The Batman Poster Has A Hidden Message That Leads One to The Riddler

The wait for The Batman is still about a month long, but the Riddler’s got everyone scratching their heads already.

Next time you walk past a poster for the film, make sure to carry a blacklight because you might just discover, and have to decipher, a hidden message from the villain.

Director Matt Reeves had teased that we’d get to see Bruce Wayne’s detective side in this one and the promotional material so far reflects that.

Twitter user @Nervatel posted pictures of one of the posters under blacklight, revealing Riddler’s secret message in blood-red color.

The poster features Batman and Catwoman standing face-to-face in front of Gotham’s skyline as the hidden text next to their heads reads, “You are a part of this too… find out why,” along with Riddler’s cipher that decodes to read “You Are El Rata Alada.”

The phrase, which has been used in previous trailers and posters as well, means ‘the winged rat’ in Spanish, but the whole sentence sounds like URL Rata Alada when said out loud, leading to the Riddler’s website.

The website has a few riddles you need to answer right in order to get exclusive images as rewards. However, try googling the answers on another tab and the Riddler ruthlessly bullies you to use your own brain instead. (Don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

The two rewards currently available are – a Falcone poster and another code similar to the Blacklight poster, which, when deciphered, reads, Expose more of Gotham.”

Previous riddles have revealed more codes and symbols, police sketches of Batman, and stills of Carmine Falcone from the film

While talking to Esquire, Reeves explained that he wanted this new version of Riddler to be more serious and drew inspiration from one of the most infamous serial killers – the Zodiac Killer.

Just like Reeves’ heavy inspiration from Kurt Cobain/Nirvana reflects in Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, the Zodiac Killer’s strong imprint on Paul Dano’s Riddler is obvious.

In the 1960s, the Bay Area of California was terrorized by the Zodiac killer, who used messages signed with a zodiac symbol and sent ciphered letters to the press in an attempt to ridicule the police.

I started thinking of the Zodiac Killer, because he did create a costume for himself and he wore a black hood, he had his own insignia. He was an early anti-superhero, a scary figure who terrorized California. That immediately made me think, oh, that could be a brand-new version of the Riddler.

The Riddler’s killing spree in The Batman begins on March 4, 2022.
