Did you feel the urge of calling up the number on Squid Game’s business card? Don’t! The number is real! Which means that Netflix has a real problem on their hands.
The phone number isn’t real in the sense that you’ll find yourself being dragged into a set of deadly games. But is a legitimate number that belongs to a South Korean resident who is in no way tied to Netflix or the show.
And my, they are quite fed up with all the calls they’re receiving!
Besides phone calls, the owner also received text messages inquiring about participating in the Squid Game itself. Use of abusive language and sharing of personal information has also been reported.
For a country that values privacy like none other (seriously, their privacy laws are no joke!), putting in a real phone number in a show that’s climbing up to be Netflix’s most-streamed globally is a gross oversight.
It has been noted that it was an unintentional mistake, yet it will have consequences.
The real owner went on two Korean news channels, Money Today and SBS, to talk about the unwelcomed, overwhelming experience.
Besides the flood of calls that caused them to switch their phone off, they also received a less than pleasant response from Netflix.
The streamer asked the owner to simply change their phone number, disregarding that they had been using it for two decades and had small businesses tied to it. On top of that, the owner was only being compensated ₩1.00 million (which is approximately $851).
Netflix even expressed that there was nothing more they could do about it since the show had already aired.
But now that the news piece is getting more exposure, especially paired with the discontent expressed by viewers online, Netflix is changing its tunes.
A Netflix spokesperson has confirmed to The Independent, that along with the production company Siren Pictures, they will be making necessary changes and editing the scenes.
It is reported that the phone number displayed on the Squid Game business card will be cut entirely. It is yet to be seen by when these changes will be active.
But the more pressing question is, why are folks calling/texting this number wanting to participate in the game? The trolling is not appreciated at all.
