Fenrir is the pet wolf of Atreus and Kratos. According to Norse mythology, he is one of the three children of Loki and Angrboda. The giant wolf wreaked havoc on any Norse god it came across. However, in the game, he is a close and trusted ally of the father-son duo.
Does Fenrir really die?
God of War Ragnarok starts off with Fimbulwinter raging at full force. Kratos and Atreus come back to the small camp, where they are based, to find Fenrir in a critical condition.
Atreus lays the ailing wolf on his lap and encourages it to have some meat. Kratos advises his son to prepare himself since Fenrir seems to be dying. In an emotional scene, Fenrir takes his last breaths in Atreus’ arms.
Atreus then unknowingly casts a spell that keeps the wolf’s soul inside his knife. Some glowing magic can be seen drifting off in the air, while some of it goes into the knife.
In the ‘Reunion’ quest, Kratos and Atreus fight Garm, the guardian of Helheim’s halls. In the boss fight that ensues, Kratos and Atreus struggle to attack the giant wolf. The violent animal can not be killed since it does not have a soul.
Later, Atreus puts Fenrir’s soul into the body of Garm, who then turns into their ally. We learn that Atreus possesses the ability to manipulate others’ souls and can move them from one form to another.
What does Sofna mean?
It is an Icelandic word that literally translates to “fall asleep.” It is said that most of the primary sources of Norse mythology are Icelandic. This explains the usage of the language in God of War Ragnarok.
What spell did Atreus cast?
“Sofna… upp frà þessu.. sofna heðan… sofna…sofna…sofna”
Atreus mutters these words under his breath as Fenrir succumbs to his death. The sentence roughly translates to, “Fall asleep…up from this…fall asleep here…fall asleep…fall asleep…fall asleep.” This spell transports the soul of Fenrir into the kid’s knife. Atreus’ magical abilities act as an advantage later on in the story.
