With a damning exposé and a two-month delay due to the ongoing pandemic, the 78th Golden Globe Awards finally kicked off with a Zoom party on February 28. The ceremony was off to a glitchy start and ended as a tepid Zoom call, which, as co-host Tina Fey said, could have been “replaced with an email”. Meanwhile, women artists and OTT platforms came out as the big winners of this year’s Golden Globes.
The organization behind the Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, gathered quite the flak in the days running up to the event for its complete lack of Black members. In what seems like a response, its roster of winners turned out quite diverse this year.
The night’s first winner was Daniel Kaluuya, for best supporting actor in Judas and the Black Messiah. Andra Day was awarded best actress for The United States vs. Billie Holiday, while John Boyega won best supporting actor in a TV series for playing a police officer in Amazon’s Small Axe.
The ceremony also paid a posthumous tribute to Chadwick Boseman for best actor in a drama in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which turned out to be his last movie role. Taylor Simone Ledward, Boseman’s widow, accepted the award in the most emotional moment of the night. “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history,” she said.
Meanwhile, women artists made history with the announcement of both the nominations and the winners. Chloé Zhao, who helmed Nomadland, became only the second woman ever to win the best director award (after Barbra Streisand, who won in 1984 for Yentl). Zhao is the first woman to receive the award in 37 years and the first Asian-American woman to ever receive it.
Zhao was joined by Regina King and Emerald Fennell, who were also up for the prize, which had previously nominated a total of only five women in the Golden Globes’ 77-year history. Meanwhile, feminist activist and Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
The other big winners at this year’s Golden Globes were the OTT platforms, especially Netflix, which managed to collect ten trophies. This included one for the best limited series for The Queen’s Gambit, in a category dominated by HBO so far. Amazon Studios was rewarded for its risk-taking on Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which won both best actor for Sacha Baron Cohen and best musical/comedy picture. However, the other big film win was an old-guard, Nomadland, for best drama.
