Henry Cavill addresses whether he still wants to be cast as James Bond, following Daniel Craig’s departure from the role.
The James Bond franchise hit the big screen back in the 1960s and has remained one of the most popular spy-film series of all time. The franchise has seen a number of actors take on the role over the years, including Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
Daniel Craig starred in five James Bond films before finally saying goodbye with the 2021 film, No Time to Die. For the first time in the history of the franchise, a film ended with the death of 007. It’s been a year since the last James Bond film hit screens, but it is still unclear who will take up the mantle after Craig.
A number of names have been considered for playing James Bond on screen, with the frontrunners being Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddleston, Richard Madden, and Cavill among others. Amid casting rumors, Cavill recently revealed that he had almost landed the role of 007 for Casino Royale, but it ultimately went to Craig.
Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson stated that the next iteration of the iconic superspy will be a complete reimagining of the character. Thus, it is unclear whether Henry Cavill is still being considered for the role.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz in the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Cavill revealed whether he is still interested in playing the role of the iconic British superspy on screen. The actor noted that though he is very busy at the moment, he would definitely consider discussing the prospects if need be.
Check out what he said below –
Yeah. I’m quite busy now. I love those guys, Barbara [Broccoli] and Mike [G. Wilson]. … Whether I’m considered for the role or not, I don’t know. But it’d be fun to have the conversation, for sure. And if I’m not, then I just want to see what they do with it next, because I think they’re amazing.
Though many would consider Cavill a perfect fit for the role of James Bond, his career has evolved drastically since the early 2000s, when he was first considered to play the part. So, he may no longer be a good fit.
Cavill was relatively unknown in the early 2000s but playing Superman in the 2013 film Man of Steel made him an overnight star. His continued appearances as the DC superhero, along with other iconic roles, has made him one of the biggest Hollywood stars of today.
Since Broccoli and Wilson previously stated that they are looking for someone who can make a ten-year commitment to the role, playing Bond might hamper Cavill’s appearances as Superman.
None can deny that Cavill’s physical attributes and personality go hand-in-hand with some of the traits of the classic James Bond. However, the producers may have been looking for someone a little different to take up the mantle. As they explained previously, James Bond 26, is all set to be a reinvention of the character.
It is probably better if the producers go for a lesser-known actor who has not already been heavily fan-cast in the role already. Moreover, an actor who isn’t already known for playing an iconic role in a popular franchise could suit the needs of the character much better.
Let us hope the next actor to come on board as James Bond will be able to live up to the character’s legacy.
