Tenza sacrifices himself for Shion and Nurugai in episode 8 of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, titled “Student and Master.”

It was an emotional and heartbreaking episode. Tenza was a good character, and his death caused real pain. What was even more painful was his master’s helplessness.

The whole episode focused on Tenza and his backstory, where we saw how a poor boy who lived in the slums was picked up by Shion and made into a great warrior.

1. Episode 9 Speculations

Shion and Nurugai might meet Gabimaru and Sagiri in episode 9 of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku.

Now that the Tensen has shown up, we will see more of their encounters with the characters. I am dying to see the fight between Gabimaru and Tensen, as that battle was nothing less than epic in the manga.

The anime is doing some great work with all the character developments and giving more details to certain backstories and lore. We will see how Choubei and Touma will recover from the well in the next episode.

3. Episode 8 Recap

The episode starts with the backstory of Tenza. He was a poor kid with no home to live in and no parents who could take care of him. He lived as a thief and beat people up when required until he met Shion.

In the present, Nurugai and Tenza are roaming around trying to find a way to escape when the Tensen shows up out of nowhere. It throws Tenza with just a little push.

Tenza stands up and cuts the Tensen up. He and Nurugai start running away, but Tensen catches up with them. A sword strikes Tensen’s head, and it is Shion. 

He tells Tenza to run away. They all run away from Tensen. Tenza thanks Shion for saving them. Shion asks why he has not executed his criminal, and Tenza tries to convince him that the girl is innocent.

After some quarreling, Shion agrees to let Nurugai live. They are about to head out to find an escape when Tensen shows up again. Shion takes Tenza and Nurugai away but gets his neck sliced in the process.

Tenza begins his attack but can’t even put a scratch on the enemy. Frustrated, Tensen pinches four holes in Tenza’s body with just one push.

We get back to Tenza’s backstory, he is not fond of Shion’s helpful nature. He doesn’t see any potential in himself and decides to leave the dojo. Shion puts a condition before him.

In order to leave, he will have to land at least one blow on his master. Only then will he be allowed to leave. The next morning, Tenza tries to dump the dojo but meets Eizen outside.

Eizen tells him about Shion’s junior, who also left the dojo and turned into a criminal, who Shion himself later executed. Tenza decides to stay and fight.

Back in the present, he realizes he is about to die. Still, he gets up to fight Tensen. He tries to tell Shion to run away but is unable to speak. Shion understands his feelings and runs away with Nurugai.

Tenza continues his attacks in all possible ways but dies in the end for the sake of his master and Nurugai. Nurugai is angry at Shion for leaving him behind, Shion tells her that he will make them pay for the death of his brother.

Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is a manga series by Yuji Kaku that ran from January 2018 to January 2021. It was serialized on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ website and app and has been collected into 13 volumes.

Gabimaru: The Hollow is a ninja assassin who is on death row. He feels nothing and can’t be killed due to his training as a shinobi. Yet, when he faces Asaemon Sagiri, he realizes his will to live and return to his wife.
