Episode 9 Speculations
Fans were proven correct. Shifting the capital did turn out to be a significant blunder and only made things worse. Tokuko has become a lot more mature since emperor Takakura’s death and ambition. Will she be able to protect her son by running away?
Biwa went from the capital to Echigo and is now back to the capital. Will she find Lady Asagi, who might be Biwa’s mother?
The ending of episode eight has left fans with the most questions. Who are these girls helping Biwa? It is unlikely that they are just ordinary miscreants. It has led fans to think there might be some secret society to help people in need.

Episode 8 Recap
Having been turned out of her home, Biwa went off to look for her mother. She visited Gio’s sister, who told her both Hotoke-Gozen and Gio had died, but a Shirabayoshi visited Gio, talking about a woman with Biwa’s eyes. She promised to send this woman a letter to ask.
Biwa is now a street musician, playing for money and food with her cat in tow. An old lady offers Biwa some food and asks her where she’s going. Biwa tells her she’s going to Echigo to look for her mother. The old lady warns her of Genji soldiers lurking near about.
Lord Yoshinaka, another Genji lord, decides if Yoritomo lost fighting the Heike, he should try his hand at winning. He is expected to attack Heike territories, so Koremori suggests he take troops to Hokuriku. Munemori recounts how the Governor of Echigo was supposed to kill Yoshinaka but suddenly died.
As Biwa makes it to Echigo, a monk tells her the story of how the Gods killed the governor for being a Heike ally. Among his concubines was a Shirabayoshi woman who had eyes like Biwa, but after his death, she had gone to the city.
Yoshinaka announced to Koremori that he would come for the Heike army tomorrow, from atop a mountain. The Heike army believed Yoshinaka to be a mannered warrior, but this came back to bite them in the neck, 70000 soldiers fell to their deaths in the mountains.
Toshiba’s, having won, will most likely march to the capital. Sukemori remarks how they will have to flee what is likely to become Genji’s capital. Tokuko tells him that the capital is wherever the emperor is.
The Heike make for Fukuhara along with Tokuko’s son, the infant emperor. Go-Shirakawa refuses to go to Fukuhara with them and takes refuge in Kurama. Koremori is seen leaving his wife and children behind in the capital, which simmers into a teary moment shared with his brothers.
They burn 50,000 estates before the Genji can enter the capital. When they reach Fukuhara, it looks run down even though it’s only been three years. Kiyotsune and Atsumori reminisce about the last time they were here, and Shigehira had played the flute with them.
In the end, Munemori sets to Fukuhara as well, and they all make for Dazaifu to regroup with allies.
As Biwa stands at a street corner in the capital, a few people are seen remarking how strange it is to see Genji banners everywhere. She sees some Genji bannermen beat poor people up and take their things, like the Heike soldiers had done previously, even killing her father.
Biwa tries to save them, and the soldier pulls a sword on her. Right then, an adolescent girl grabs Biwa’s hand takes her away. Two other similarly dressed girls are seen taking her Biwa and cat with them.
About The Heike Story
The Heike Story is an original anime by Studio Science SARU which follows the story of a musician girl Biwa, who has the power to see ghosts and the future. She befriends the heir of the powerful Taira clan and prophesies the clan’s eventual downfall.
The story is adapted from Hideo Furukawa’s novel Heiki Monogatari, a retelling of the 12th century Genpei War between the Taira and the Minamoto clan for the control of Japan.
