Marvel’s first-ever animated series, What If…?, finally premiered its first episode on Disney+. With just weeks after Loki unlocked the Marvel multiverse, we now get to see the characters we know in a different light.
Episode one of the anthology series saw a big twist on the First Avenger (aka owner of America’s Ass). The premiere episode rewrote Captain America’s history, and instead of Steve Rodgers, it’s Peggy Carter who is injected with Dr. Erskine’s super-soldier serum.
In an interview with Discussing Film, the head writer of What If…?, A.C. Bradley, spoke about Captain Carter and What If…?’s future.
According to Bradley, the scripts for the show’s Season 2 are almost done. When asked about updates on What If…? and how the pandemic had affected working on Season 2, she answered,
Work on season two has been different because of COVID, and I think all our lives are very different right now. But we’ve had an amazing team, and writing is knee-deep. Almost done, actually. Because these episodes are so difficult to animate, the writing has to happen quite a bit before the show airs. As hard as the last year and a half has been for production, it’s been harder on people – it’s been hard on everyone, I can’t complain.
A.C. Bradley
While talking about Captain Carter, she mentioned that Marvel already had ideas for the character and elaborated on the moment she decided would change Peggy’s fate.
When I came onto [What If…?], it was already sort of decided that they wanted to do Peggy Carter as the First Avenger. So my job was finding the moment, finding the what if actually. While rewatching The First Avenger, there is a moment, It’s a pretty innocuous moment. It’s Dr. Erskine asking Peggy to wait in the booth.
But given the state of the world and where we all are, and as a woman in the industry, it felt like a great opportunity to have Peggy stay in the room and let that carry weight. Let that moment carry a different connotation now, and let that be the change that started the whole universe.

Bradley also added that she hoped people would get vaccinated, wear a mask, and expressed her wish to work with the team together when things go back to normal.
‘What if’ T’Challa was kidnapped by Yondu instead of Peter Quill? Episode 2 will show a reality where T’challa is Starlord instead of the king of Wakanda.
What If..? premiered on Disney+ August 11 and has new episodes coming out every Wednesday for a total of 9 episodes.
