Despite winning critical acclaim, Masters of the Universe: Revelation gathers humongous review bombs from “fans” on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score for the series sits at a staggering 27%.
Kevin Smith shouldered the responsibility of making a sequel to the 1983’s He-Man and Masters of the Universe: Revelation series which had been a childhood favorite of many. Given Smith’s previous works and credits, anticipation grew among fans.
The first blow came with the “revelation” that the 2021 Masters of the Universe would introduce Teela’s story. He-Man fans did not like that the original protagonist of the series would be given the back burner.
Now, only a day after the series premiere on Netflix, antis storm bombed Masters of the Universe: Revelation on Rotten Tomatoes, against an ironic critic’s consensus of a 94% score.
There is also no telling how many accounts were specifically created to contribute to this low score, and how many of them are plain trolls or bots.
This certainly follows the trend of review bombs when established franchises change certain elements (like race or gender of a character) or bring into focus members of the supporting ensemble instead of the main lead. Captain Marvel, Ghost Busters and Star Wars: The Last Jedi have all faced this backlash.
But it is notable to consider that fans were also upset at the heavy marketing towards He-Man who ultimately did not get the screen time anticipated.
Nobody likes having a carrot dangled in front of them. Certain fans even stated that a show around Teela itself wasn’t the problem – but it should’ve been marketed that way.
Here’s a tweet capturing fans’ frustration.
Now what’s been done is done — and with part two yet to be aired, fans may find some room to make peace with the disappointment and perhaps, enjoy the show for what it really is, right now.
This also gives Kevin Smith’s production team a reckoning about future projects, a sure footnote that fans won’t be blind to the ole bait and switch.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation is available to stream on Netflix. Part 2’s release date is yet to be announced.
