HBO Documentary on Kim Wall Submarine Murder Gets New Trailer

HBO has put out a trailer for its forthcoming documentary, Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall, which addresses the murder of Kim Wall while scrutinizing a submarine. Wall was an investigating journalist who disappeared in 2017 after setting off on a homemade submarine made by a Danish inventor, Peter Madsen. Eleven days after she originally boarded the vessel, parts of Wall’s mutilated body were recovered, and a subsequent murder lawsuit ensued.

The documentary is made in two parts titled The Crime and The Punishment. The first part focuses on Wall’s disappearance showing last texts sent by Wall and attempts made by friends, family, and the general public to find her. Wall was quite popular amongst her colleagues, and was well known for her articles featured in The New York Times, Vice, and The Guardian amongst various other publications. “Kim was clearly made for journalism,” one of her friends shares, “The stories she sought out were not mainstream.” Soon after she went missing, many took to social media to raise consciousness regarding the situation.

The second part will focus on details of Madsen’s trial, including the media’s coverage. Clips of news coverage in the trailer likened Madsen to a ‘Danish Elon Musk’ before the attack, giving way to the man’s narcissistic persona. Part two will also delve into the mindset of Madsen who kept denying his involvement.

This part also showcases critiques of the media who used victim-blaming tactics in their reports, resulting in massive criticism from family and the general public for their sexist connotations. One woman featured in the trailer says, “I wouldn’t have thought twice about getting on that submarine, because that was the job she was going to do.” Have a look at the trailer for the same:

The series also includes commentary from Royal Denmark Navy Lt. Commander Ditte Dyreborg, Royal Denmark Navy Commander Lars Moller Pedersen; Madsen’s biographer Thomas Djursing; Deputy Chief of Police Mattias Sigfridsson; Journalists Trine Maria Ilsoe, Frank Hvilsom, Julie Thomsen; Oceanographer Torben Vang; and others.

Erin Lee Carr has directed many documentaries, counting the critically acclaimed At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal. With her advice in non-fiction storytelling, and a particularly horrid murder at the center of the story, Undercurrent will likely be an exciting watch. The true-crime documentary genre has blown up as of late, with HBO in particular producing various films and series.

Whether this has soaked the market and made another true-crime investigation less attractive to viewers, or whether the well known “submarine trial” as it’s known in Denmark, will attract both true crime aficionados and the public will have to be seen. Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall premieres on HBO on the 8th of March.
