Michael B Jordan’s Val-Zod Moves Forward with Two Writers on Board

Writers Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters are confirmed to be on board for Michael B Jordan’s Val-Zod production.

To familiarize you with the duo’s works, they’ve recently written for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts releasing July 2022. Previously, they’ve been tied with Apple for Creed II and Amazon Prime for The Nola. 

Their addition to the Val-Zod crew not only makes us anticipate a good screenplay but also drives forward the momentum for the HBO Max series. It may not be long before we get other solid details like tentative release date, cast, and plot.

What we do know so far about Val-Zod is that it is helmed under Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society for DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros TV.

As of yet, Jordan is only positioned as executive producer, but many hope that he takes up the role of the Man of Steel as well.

The project was born out of differences between Jordan and WB; the former not wanting to get involved in a race-blending reimagination of Superman.

Because of this, it seems that WB has decided to go ahead with two iterations: JJ Abrams’ Black Kal-El written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Jordan’s Val-Zod.

While’s Abram’s endeavor is an interesting take, it inevitably overshadows Black characters who already exist within DC and deserve to have their stories told. This is especially true for Val-Zod, who, like Kal-El and Kara Zor-El, escaped Krypton as a child.

He eventually does take up the title of Superman (of Earth-Two) in order to fight against a brainwashed Kal-El.

Earlier this year, Jordan spoke to Cinepop about how different IPs, properties, and characters have given us the opportunity to see more Black roles on screen. But these projects have not yet seen the light of day.

He emphasized that “there are certain ones that should just be where they are.” It is clear he aims to take this conviction forward with Val-Zod.
