HBO Max has dropped the official teaser for its four-episode limited series, titled Landscapers, starring Olivia Colman and David Thewlis.
The teaser gives us the first look at the chilling true story about a crime that remained hidden for 15 years due to fabricated lies and pretense.
From the producers of Chernobyl, the series will explore a ‘unique love story.’ The clip begins in a rosy, peaceful setting in France and progressively gets more obscure and gloomy by the end.
Colman and Thewlis look like they could be portraying any other ordinary couple in the first few seconds. Still, even without any prior knowledge of the actual incident, the viewer gets a feeling that they’re far from what one would call ‘a normal couple.’
The series is based on the true story of how a couple, Susan and Christopher Edwards, greedily killed her parents, William and Patricia Wycherley, in 1998 and buried their bodies in the garden of a house in Forest Town, Nottinghamshire.
The Edwards maintained the lie about the Wycherleys being alive by sending Christmas cards and letters to their relatives, creating joint accounts, and forging signatures to keep the money flowing. Susan even wrote letters to relatives saying her parents had sold the house to travel and settle in Ireland.
Susan and Christopher managed to maintain this façade for 15 years to keep benefitting from her parents’ pensions and benefit claims until they finally ran out of luck.
The couple panicked when a letter from the Centenarian Society arrived in 2012, asking for a face-to-face meeting with William to celebrate his 100th birthday. But this was not possible.
Susan and Christopher fled to France but soon ran out of cash. That’s when they confessed to a relative about the reason they fled. Secrets started to unearth when the said relative reported the crime to the police in 2014.
An interesting thing to note about the teaser is that some of the shots look like they’ve been taken from an old, black-and-white Hollywood film.
This might not be just for the aesthetics; when the Edwards were caught, they were in heavy debt, and they had spent thousands of pounds on Hollywood memorabilia like signed photos, autographs, and stamps of Gary Cooper and Frank Sinatra.
To say that the couple was fascinated by retro Hollywood films, escaping reality and living in a dream would be an understatement.
Will Sharpe directs Landscapers, created and written by Ed Sinclair. Other cast members include Kate O’ Flynn, Dipo Ola, Samuel Anderson, David Hayman, Felicity Montagu, and Daniel Rigby.
Landscapers will premiere on December 6 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
