HBO Max leaves Amazon Prime, Tries To Woo Users With Half Prices

For a streaming platform that holds some of the most highly-anticipated 2021 releases, HBO Max is offering a pretty good deal to its users.

As reported by Deadline, WarnerMedia’s HBO Max is slashing the price in half and offering new and renewed users their ad-free services, as HBO has finally cut its ties with Amazon Prime Video Channels.

Starting Friday, September 17 to September 26, users can get their hands on ad-free HBO and HBO Max at $7.49 per month for six months. After that, the channels will be back to their usual (and expensive) $14.99 per month.

Users can sign up for the half-discount on the hbomax.com website or through Apple, LG, Roku, Microsoft, Google, Vizio, and Sony.

This heavy discount comes in as WarnerMedia and HBO’s attempt to lure in 5 million subscribers who had opted for the service through Amazon in the U.S. In June’s quarterly report, HBO and HBO Max reported 47 million U.S subscribers and 67.5 global subscribers, according to Deadline.

This move comes with the hope of HBO and HBO Max’s total number of subscribers taking a massive hit in the upcoming quarter.

The company’s target is a total of 70 to 73 million global subscribers for HBO and HBO Max. With incredible movies and shows lined up, this move hits the nail and is highly likely a step in the right direction.

Even though the exit deal was out in the open for almost two years, subscribers saw changes only last month in August. HBO Max also recently announced its expansion in 14 European countries in 2022.

HBO first left Apple TV, and now Amazon Prime Video Channels. Its relationship with Amazon started before the streaming era and was distributed through various platforms as streaming eventually became bigger. But, Amazon’s distribution revenue percentage wasn’t cheap.

Now with a discounted rate, subscribers can enjoy all of HBO and HBO Max movies, shows, and Originals, including the past and current contents. Max Original series include stuff from Adult Swim, DC Cartoon Network, Warner Bros., and more.

With Warner Bros. and HBO Max’s deals of day-and-date movies releases in the U.S, a $7.49 ad-free plan for the upcoming highly-anticipated The Matrix Resurrections and Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho seem like a good deal.

In addition to them, there’s Malignant currently on the platform. Future releases will be The Many Saints of Newark and Villeneuve’s much-awaited Dune, both scheduled for October.

As for dramas, we have the Doom Patrol’s third season on September 23, the award-winning Succession’s third season, and the final season of Insecure, both in October.
