Hawkeye Episode 1 and 2 — “I Could Do (Watch) This All Day”

Hawkeye makes an amazing debut with its first two episodes, proving that it is indeed the gift that keeps giving.

What Hawkeye aces in its first episode itself is exposition. The well-written and well-paced narrative shows us Kate Bishop’s origin story: a 10-year-old girl who survived the Chitauri invasion thanks to the Avengers, in particular, Hawkeye.

It transitions to Clint and his kids enjoying a few days in New York before returning home for Christmas. Cue the ridiculously great Rogers musical that definitely banked on Cap’s iconic line (see title) but also reminded Clint about the tragedy that surrounds such heroics.

Now to the important bits:

  • How did Kate Bishop get Ronin’s suit?

At a charity gala, Kate overhears her mom Eleanor having a disagreement with her fiancé’s uncle Armand. Spunky Kate, conveniently dressed as a waiter, decides to tail Armand and follows him into a black-market auction.

Here she sees her mom’s fiancé Jack trying to bid against Armand for Ronin’s retractable sword and suit. Chaos strikes as a gang of “Tracksuit Mafia” hijack the place, trying to steal one of the auction items, Tony’s watch.

Kate quickly grabs the Ronin suit, puts it on, and battles the mafia with some amazing moves. She ends up rescuing Lucky the Pizza Dog and also manages to get caught on the news. Quite an eventful night!

  • Clint Barton crosses paths with Kate Bishop

Kate is tracked by the Tracksuit Mafia, who believe her to be Ronin. Just about when things seem dire, a mysterious figure takes down all the assailants. Be and behold, Kate is starstruck with Hawkeye, exclaiming, “I’m your biggest fan!”

Clint is not enthusiastic about the whole ordeal and simply wants to clear the mess, beginning with recovering his Ronin suit and eliminating the Tracksuit Mafia. But it’s not going to be so easy, “bro.”

  • Hawkeye’s villains

In the first episode, we also discover that Armand has been stabbed to death with a sword. Kate believes it is Jack’s doing but cannot seem to suss him out. We know that Jack is also supposed to be the Swordsman, so let’s wait to see how that works out.

At the end of Episode 2, we finally meet Echo. She is positioned as another bad guy, introduced as the Tracksuit Mafia’s boss.

However, Eleanor Bishop feels like another itch to scratch — there is simply something dubious about the way she acts.

Hawkeye Episode 2 ended with both Clint and Kate being captured by the Tracksuit Mafia and Echo. There are no teasers yet of what’s to come in Episode 3, but I bet it’s going to be just as entertaining as the premiere!
