Money Heist Season 6: Is the Professor and His Gang Returning for Part 6?

There’s a sudden spark of rumors on the internet about the popular Spanish crime-drama, Money Heist, returning for season 6.

As many of us may remember, the series became a rage back in 2020. The Professor and his team added some thrill to our boring, quarantined lives a couple of years ago.

A spin-off of the series, Berlin, based on the popular titular character has recently premiered on Netflix. However, the show has hardly been able to live up to the hype of the original show.

Amidst all of it, fans are speculating about a potential Money Heist season 6. There are discussions all over Reddit, Facebook and Twitter about some rumors.

It’s quite surprising, if you ask me, given that the series ended in 2021. Since then, the makers have never hinted that the series will return.

1. Is Part 5 The Last Season of Money Heist?

Money Heist season 5, which aired in 2021, is the show’s final season. The showrunners confirmed that the popular series will not return for a sixth season. There will, however, be some spinoffs like Berlin (2023).

Although there has been a sudden surge in rumors about Money Heist returning for another season, there is no truth to these rumors.

Creator Alex Pina mentioned a while ago that he prioritized storytelling over anything else when it comes to Money Heist. He wanted the series to end at the right time and not drag it for long just for some ratings.

The ending came at the right time, as the characters who made it out alive got their well-deserved happy endings. Fans had to say goodbye to two of the most beloved characters from the show, but many of them made it out alive, although with major scars.

In fact, Pina took the right decision to call it quits after part 5, as much of the criticism for parts 3 and 4 was about the show being dragged unnecessarily. Many fans thought the show could have ended after the first two seasons, as things became way too messy with the Royal Bank plot.

Therefore, it made no sense to drag the story after part 5. Pina has confirmed that he rewrote the ending several times to make sure it was perfect.

“We’ve made over 2,000 minutes of fiction with two heists. I think we’ve exhausted some of the characters’ emotional arcs and their arcs of transformation.

We’ve told a lot and I think it’s a good time to stop. It’s a very climatic season and I think it’s always better to leave sooner rather than later.”

Alex Pina

Pina has not spoken about going back to the show since then, so there’s no chance of Money Heist returning for part 6. Jesus Colmenar, director and executive producer of Money Heist also shared Pina’s thoughts. He said:

“We have many examples in international fiction of series that we think dragged on too long. And I think the smartest thing to do when a series is at the peak of its success, as Álex says, is to leave with a bang and make a season that is very special in many ways.”

Given that the team does not plan to continue the series anymore, it’s high time we stop trusting these baseless rumors about season 6. It does nothing for the series other than harming its legacy.

2. How did Money Heist end?

Money Heist ended with the Professor and his team getting hold of the gold from the Royal Bank of Spain. They also returned counterfeit gold to the government to stop them from going bankrupt on paper. The plan restored order in Spain’s failing economy.

Although Sierra, Tamayo, and the police force arrested the Professor, he got out of it with the help of his multiple backup plans. In the end, the series ended with a win-win situation for both parties.

The government faked the death of the Professor and his gang to paint themselves as heroes in front of the people. However, the gang escaped with the real gold and returned some brass painted as gold to the Spanish government so they could maintain order in front of its people.

The ending of Money Heist shows that security and wealth are an illusion, and the Professor’s idea of capitalism being a scam is true.

When it comes to the characters, Denver reunited with Stockholm, while the Professor reunited with Raquel in the end. They got their romantic happy ending, while the show ended on a happy note for everyone else.

3. Are there spin-offs of Money Heist?

Money Heist has a spin-off titled ‘Berlin’ on Netflix which is based on one of the most popular characters from the series, Berlin. Money Heist: Korea, is a Korean remake of the series and is set in an alternate universe.

However, none of the spin-offs have been able to reach the popularity and reception of the original series. Both the spin-offs received average reviews from critics.

Berlin premiered on Netflix in December 2023 but received mixed to poor reviews. However, the show shot to Netflix’s Top 10 list within days of release.

Money Heist: Korea is more of a remake rather than a spin-off. It is set in an alternate universe but follows the same plot as the original series. As such, those who have watched the original series would not find anything new.

Creator Alex Pina has spoken about other potential spin-offs of the series. He said he would consider making certain spin-offs based on the legacy and popularity of the actual show. A spin-off of Nairobi, Tokyo, or the Professor’s past life would be fun to watch if well-made.

4. About Money Heist

Money Heist (Spanish: La casa de papel, meaning “The House of Paper”) is a Spanish heist crime drama television series created by Álex Pina.

The series traces two long-prepared heists led by the Professor (Álvaro Morte), one on the Royal Mint of Spain, and one on the Bank of Spain. The narrative is told in a real-time-like fashion and relies on flashbacks, time-jumps, hidden character motivations, and an unreliable narrator for complexity.

The show focuses on the meticulous plans and the specific contingencies of the Professor who has prepared his group of robbers dressed in red jumpsuits and Dali masks.
