Greatest villain of American cinema
Dr. Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character from a suspense novel series by Thomas Harris. He is a respected Baltimore forensic psychiatrist, as well as a cannibalistic serial killer.
After he is caught and incarcerated for his crimes, he consults with the FBI to assist them in finding other serial killers.
In most of Harris’s Hannibal representations, the above description holds true. One of the most popular representations was in the film Silence of the Lambs with Hannibal portrayed by veteran actor Anthony Hopkins.
The actor went on to win the Academy Award for the portrayal of the cannibalistic doctor.
The latest representation of the character has been in the NBC television series Hannibal which debuted in 2013. Focussed on the development of the relationship between Lector and Will Graham, an FBI profiler the series expanded on the character and was widely acclaimed.
In the series, Hannibal is portrayed by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, who won a Saturn Award for his performance.
Who was the real Hannibal?
Writer Thomas Harris gave a few interviews but not until mid-2013 about the origins of this character which has caught the imagination of audiences around the world.
Harris finally revealed that the character was in fact inspired by a real-life doctor and murderer he met at a prison in the city of Monterrey. As a 23-year-old reporter, Harris met a man named Salazar during a trip to Mexico in the 1960s.
Numerous investigations into the real person behind Salazar revealed him to be Alfredo Ballí Treviño, a physician from an upper-class Monterrey family who was found guilty of murdering his close friend (and lover) Jesus Castillo Rangel and mutilating his body.
Trevino was also suspected of killing and dismembering several hitch-hikers in the city outskirts during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Are you a fan of this cannibalistic doctor too or at least, was he the first cannibal you ever knew? Comment below and let us know. Also, you could turn to the event itself and ask a few questions for yourself.
