The first season of the popular sports anime, Haikyu!!, came out in 2014 and has been in the audience’s hearts ever since. Haikyuu revolves around Karasuno High School, and it’s two first-year players – Tobio Kageyama and Shoyo Hinata.
The anime released its fourth season – To The Top Cour 1 last year and is now the most anticipated anime of 2020. Yes, I said it – there is nothing better than Haikyu!! coming out in 2020. Deal with it!
The best announcement for 2020 anime season is that Haikyu!! Season 4 Part 2 is happening – Haikyu!! To The Top is not finished as there are multiple chapters left to be covered.
Haikyu!! S4 Part 2 was initially slated for Summer 2020 but got delayed with no news for its potential release until a Tweet from @YonkouProd, an unofficial but reliable news source for anime news.
The official announcement came out one week later of Yonkou’s tease, and the anime is now set to release in October. Let’s talk about all things Haikyu!! season 5, from the release date, trailer breakdown, and visuals to the expected story and what’s going on in the manga.

Now that season 4 has been announced, there are many questions that need to be answered, such as the possibility of further delay since COVID-19 has not yet been handled. Let’s begin the discussion.
2. S4 Cour 2 Delay

May 22, 2020 “Haikyu ~ TO THE TOP” Production Committee
The announcement for season 4’s delay came in May and riled up the fans worldwide. However, you are not a true Haikyuu fan if you get riled up this easily. Many fans were seen encouraging each other with phrases from the anime such as:
“Don’t mind! Don’t mind!”
“Coronavirus Nice Kill!”
The only issue that remains is that even though Haikyu!! has been rescheduled to Fall 2020, the threat of COVID-19 still persists. Will season 4 be delayed again? I have discussed it in the article you can check out below.
3. Production Updates
The production for Haikyu!! Season 4 part 2 was not going smoothly due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus and some other issues with the cast.
One top of COVID, one of the voice actors, Nobuhiko Okamoto, who is the voice for one of the most energetic characters – Yu Nishinoya, suffered a vocal cord injury in May 2020.
If the rumors are correct, his surgery was a success and the production for Haikyu!! To The Top’s 2nd cour is back on track. While the second cour was initially slated for April 2020, it got delayed to October 2020 with a teaser/Tweet.
In addition, “Haikyu!! TO THE TOP” episode 13 re-up PV just before the Inarizaki war rush uploaded before broadcasting! !! The last narration is a new recording! !! Please look forward to the second cool broadcast in October!!!

4. Key Visuals

The visual shows a fascinating take on the upcoming season due to the position of the characters – Karasuno’s ace Asahi is place directly in the cross with Aran Ojiro, who ranks on #5 as an ace. We also see the dynamic duo of Kageyama and Hinata against the Miya Twins. Atsumu is directly against Kageyama – former is the #1 setter while the latter aims for the position.
Two more visuals were also released on Twitter for the Karasuno and Inarizaki player lineup.
Needless to say, both the teams and players look stunning! Along with the release announcement of season 4, another announcement that came with a visual was of the stage play. The stage play that will show the episode of ‘Nekoma vs. Karasuno’ is scheduled for Fall 2020.
And, if you didn’t know, there is a Haikyu!! To the Top Fair that will be organized in Fall. Check the details in the Tweet below:

5. Trailer Breakdown & Plot
Haikyu!! season 5 has released two teased clips so far, both of which are variations of each other. The first clip was a teaser and announced the initial release date, which got postponed due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak.
The first trailer teases Karasuno High School vs. Inarizaki High School. We see the entire Karasuno team and some spike shots by the dynamic duo – Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama.
On the Inarizaki end, the clip shows the best twins in High School volleyball – Miya Atsumu and Miya Osamu, aka the Miya Twins. We also see the top #5 spiker, Aran Ojiro.
The trailer ends with the release date announcement for April 2020. However, after the anime was delayed, a remastered version of the initial clip was streamed on YouTube in July 2020.
The new teaser for Haikyu!! Season 4 (To The Top) Part 2 was 54-second long and officially announced the new release date to be this Fall in October 2020.
This was an updated version of the initial clip. Atsumu says that “I absolutely hate playing against people who suck.” To this, Kageyama replies (about Hinata) with, “Though he sucks. But he’s not weak.”
The final announcement says, “The second cour of Haikyu!! To The Top broadcast is now scheduled for October 2020!”
6. Expected Storyline/Plot
Haikyu!! Season 5 will follow the footsteps of season 3 in terms of plot. The entire second cour of Haikyu!! To the Top will focus on the battle between Karasuno High and Inarizaki High.
The first cour of the anime ended in chapter 249 of the manga, and the second cour will begin from chapter 250, titled “Contenders,” and end in chapter 293, titled “The Promised Place.”
The next season will cover volumes 28 through 33 of the manga; you can check volume covers for 28 and 29 below.
The match between Karasuno and Inarizaki ends at the 290th chapter; hence, it’s likely that the final episode will give us info on the other matches. However, this is not the end of the excitement as the next chapter that will begin Haikyu!! season 6 will start from chapter 294, titled “Battle at the Trash Heap,” – yes, you heard right, after Inarizaki, Karsuno will be having their destiny match with Nekoma.
7. Where to Watch
One of the things that are strange about an anime as popular as Haikyu!! is its unavailability on various streaming platforms. Haikyu!! season 1 and 2 are available for streaming of Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu. However, Haikyu!! season 3 and season 4 (Haikyu!!: To the Top) are only available on Crunchyroll.
I. Will Haikyu!! Season 5 release on Netflix?
So far, there is no information or announcement of Haikyu!! To The Top (Season 4) Cour 2 coming on Netflix. It is also important to note that both the third and fourth seasons are yet to land on Netflix, so the Haikyu!! Season 5 release date on Netflix might be much later than you were expecting.
However, you can always use a VPN and stream from other country-based Netflix subscriptions as all Haikyu!! four seasons are available on Netflix in Asian countries.
Here is my complete Haikyu!! Watch Order Guide for Netflix.
8. Opening & Ending Theme
The opening theme song of the anime is “Breakthrough” by SUPER BEAVER. The second promotional video contains the ending theme of the 2nd cour, “One Day” by SPYAIR.
While the first PV contained the story of the Karasuno team, the second PV is from the narrative perspective of Inarizaki High’s team.
From the get-go, Atsumu Miya, Rintaro Suna, and Aran Ojiro have been highlighted as the best and most ambitious players.
Both the PVs show incredible shoots and blocks from our beloved characters, and fans are hooked to witness the return of Kageyama.
9. Haikyu!! Manga Finished
Haikyu!! manga came concluded on July 19, 2020, with its 402nd and final chapter. The manga had been running for eight consecutive and glorious years and came to a close with 42 volumes and 402 chapters.
Chapter 402 of the Haikyu!! manga also contained a color spread of Karasuno vs. Nekoma – the legendary dumpster battle while all the other teams are watching.
The final chapter of the manga showed a time skip; we saw Hinata and Kageyama playing alongside Bokuto, Ushiwaka, Hoshiumi, and Atsumu Miya in the Olympics. Indeed a dream come true for the Haikyu!! fans! – and quite literally at that, check out the fan reactions below:
The series author, Haruichi Furudate, also commented on manga getting concluded and expressed his gratitude for being able to work on the Haikyu!! manga. Check out his comment below:

I. Haikyu!! Live-Action
Haikyuu season 4 will also be having a stage play with Japan’s V.League for a match between Schweiden Adlers and MSBY Jackals in August.
Here’s the poster:
The match between DIVISION 1 players will be broadcasted live on TV and YouTube.
II. Will there be a sequel?
Haikyu!! manga will likely have a sequel which will deal with Haikyu!! Olympics – we will see our superstars Hinata Shoyo and Kageyama Tobio playing Olympic Volleyball alongside Bokuto, Hoshiyomi, Ushijima, and Miya Atsumu.
This theory came into being when a fan found a seven-year-old author comment by Haruichi Furudate, which goes like this:
Now, having a sequel is very common for sports manga. There are many examples such as Kengan Omega, Diamond no Ace Act II, and Baki: Son of Ogre.
For your convenience, I have explained all the possible outcomes on the topic of Haikyu!! sequel here: Will Haikyu!! manga have a sequel? Or is it the end?
10. Recap
I. Season 4 Finale
The final episode of Haikyu!! Season 4: To The Top, episode 13 titled “The Second Day,” begins with Tanaka finally realizing that he now stands a chance – the possibility of Ryu making a girlfriend is within reach.
The first day of the High School Volleyball National Tournament has ended, and Karasuno High School has won its first match! The situation tenses up as their opponents on the second day is the formidable Inarizaki High School. Their team has the Miya Twins: Atsumu Muya and Osamu Miya, and Aran Ojiro, who ranks in the top 5 aces.
After a good night’s rest, the boys reach the stadium, and the official warm-up begins. The cheer songs for Inarizaki are loud enough to overwhelm the entire stadium, and it doesn’t help when they stop at Atsu Miya’s sign in an instant.
The moment has come – the ball is in Kageyama’s reach – he sets up a seemingly perfect toss for Hinata to spike. Hinata responds with his highest al coolest jump, BUT he’s so excited that he forgets to spike! OH MY GOD! I couldn’t stop laughing when this happened.
What do you think will happen next season? Let’s discuss this in the comment section below!
II. Recap of Season 1-3
Haikyuu season 1 kicks off with the most apparent storyline for sports anime these days. An energetic and lively boy (Hinata Shoyou) in love with a sport (Volleyball) and filled with immense raw talent is deprived of the complexities of that sport due to the lack of proper training. He clashes with a cool ass guy(Kageyama Tobio) known as a prodigy of the sport since junior high.
The pilot starts with Hinata and his rookie team playing Volleyball against the most obvious winner of the Junior High, Kageyama Tobio. Hinata Shoyou is small in stature and is the last choice for a sport like Volleyball, but for years he has developed his thigh and leg muscles and has a knack for jumping higher than the tallest athletes of his age.
Tobio, aka ‘The King of Court’,’ is the guy blessed by the Volley-gods and seems to be the best setter ever!
Junior High finishes, and the players prepare for the selection of Senior High Schools. The first day at Karasuno High School becomes difficult for Tobio and Hinata when Hinata, who decided to beat Kageyama in High School, finds out that they both went to the same school.
Karasuno High School is known as the ‘fallen champions’ or ‘flightless crows’ these days. Karasuno was once on the top of High School Volleyball, but over time the winners had to leave their pedestal. At Karasuno, the rookies join the volleyball team under the captaincy of Daichi Sawamura, the most reliable member of the team.
So started Karasuno’s journey to the top of High School Volley. After tasting multiple defeats and learning from their mistakes, Karasuno shined more than ever. Season 3 ended in the best way ever! With Hinata’s last jump, Karasuno defeated the undefeated champions Shiratorizawa and the team proved that they are not ‘flightless crows’ but the ‘Ravens of Sky.’
III. Recap of Season 4
Haikyu!! To The Top’s 1st cour was merely a setup or a ‘hype season’ for its second cour. We were initially shown the laidback side of events until the announcement! Now that Karasuno has Shiratorizawa beat, the fallen crows are the talk of the town.
Shiratorizawa’s coach invites Kei Tsukishima for an exclusive training session for select Volleyball players. Kageyama, on the other hand, is invited to train with the Olympics coach along with the top players in the country.
This season was for Kageyama and Hinata to realize what all they are doing wrong – Kageyama attends the training camp while Hinata sneaks into Tsukishima’s. Since he wasn’t officially invited, he agrees to be the ball boy for an entire week.
After a week of hardcore training, the Nationals begin!
