In a Reddit “Ask Me Anything,” Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard reveals that the film originally ended differently. The ending saw Godzilla ultimately emerge the winner after a three-round slugfest.
Almost one month has passed since the release of the MonsterVerse showdown and it has been nothing short of a huge success. Fans are loving it, and critical acceptance has been generally favorable. Notably, Godzilla vs. Kong has already surpassed the worldwide box office performance of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
The beasts collided again, 59 years after the original King Kong vs. Godzilla. Although, it’s a different story context, the wonder of seeing two giant monsters pummel each other was still there. Godzilla vs. Kong clearly had an outstanding social media presence in the advertising of its release. Fans enjoyed debating on who would be victorious.
Although Godzilla emerged as the winner, Kong got the finishing blow on the robot when he was awakened to help fight against Mechagodzilla. The monsters then acknowledged each other before Godzilla left for the ocean, while the movie gave Kong a sendoff as King of the Hollow Earth.
However, quite interestingly, Wingard recently participated in an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit, answering various questions on Godzilla vs. Kong. Upon being asked by a user if there were any alternate endings planned before the final version was worked out, the director admitted that the film did originally conclude differently.
“The original ending was just G swimming into the ocean but that felt like it didn’t properly tie up Kong’s story,”.
Adam Wingard
Most fans would probably agree that the ending in the final version is superior. Godzilla and Kong acknowledging each other after their tag team worked, verified that the two were no longer enemies despite an archaic rivalry. Although Kong lost the battle with Godzilla earlier, portraying him ruling in the Hollow Earth gave the ape a satisfying closing.
Unfortunately, the ending of Godzilla vs. Kong didn’t set up any future sequels. Though Wingard had revealed a little while ago there was enough footage for a 5-hour cut of Godzilla vs. Kong, he isn’t interested in any kind of director’s cut. Hopefully, when the film releases on home media, eliminated scenes will make their way to the special features.
