You cannot have horror and fairytales without Guillermo del Toro. His intrigue and fascination with monsters have given us some of the best visual creations on screen. Now, he finally reveals what his visions for DC’s Justice League Dark were.
In 2021, Del Toro was tied to a Justice League Dark movie adaptation. These characters had only recently gotten popular due to the New 52 comic, and Warner Bros definitely wanted to transfer that success to the DCEU.
However, plans went dormant, and Del Toro eventually left the deal in 2015. But had it gone through, what would Justice League Dark look like?
In conversation with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, the director talks about how his team would consist of Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp Thing, John Constantine, and Kloarian the Witch Boy.
Watch what his plans for the scrapped movie were:
He talks about exploring the dynamics between Abby Arcane and Swamp Thing, as well as giving Deadman a body and portraying how he would experience that person’s consciousness. But his all-time favorite character? Well, that’s the demon Etrigan!
Del Toro ends by saying that he was always a DC guy, so this project was definitely one close to his heart.
Now the initial storyline from the comics was that after Enchantress defeated the Justice League, a more supernatural team would need to step up to bring about justice. That’s where Justice League Dark would come in.
Del Toro does not reveal if his movie’s premise was based on similar events, but I can only imagine he did have a wonderful setup in mind.
The scrapped Justice League Dark movie has now been transformed into smaller projects like a movie focused on Zatanna and two HBO Max series for Constantine and Madame Xanadu, respectively.
Along with Justice League Dark, Del Toro was also once attached to directing a Hulk TV series. However, he is yet to dip his feet into Marvel or DC.
Del Toro’s recent works include Nightmare Alley and the upcoming Pinocchio, which are sure to make a splash like any other big franchise!
