Another day passes and NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1630 disappoints again. The quiet launch of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 is accompanied by the official performance figures from Inno3D. The figures reveal that the latest low-budget GTX 1630 based on 2018’s Turing Architecture is as fast as the 6-year-old GTX 1050 Ti which it was supposed to be replacing.
Yesterday we saw that the GTX 1630 turned out to be even slower than AMD Radeon RX 6400 which was in itself a big disappointment. Although the GTX 1050 Ti was not included in the tests, we assumed that the GTX 1630 would be at least faster than the card it is supposed to be replacing. While NVIDIA itself did not release the performance figures, one of NVIDIA’s partners Inno3D revealed the figures.
While the initial hunch that the GTX 1630 is replacing the GTX 1050 Ti which is no more in production was true, the $169 price of the GTX 1630 is a massive disappointment as the 6-year-old GTX 1050 Ti cost $139 with the same performance. The GTX 1630 gives comparable gaming performance to GTX 1050 Ti and 17% better performance than GTX 1050. The gap widens in more demanding titles such as Control, Cyberpunk 2077 or Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
One of the advantages of GTX 1630 is that it has a more feature-rich decoder that supports VP8 and H.265 (HEVC) formats. The GTX 1050 Ti card on the Pascal chip did not have this support.
The GeForce GTX 1630 is based on the TU117-150 GPU with 512 CUDA cores, a reduction from the 768 cores in GTX 1050 Ti. It also features a bandwidth of 96 GB/s which is half of GTX 1050 Ti’s 192 GB/s, making it the slowest Turing-based graphics card from NVIDIA. The boost clock is one of the notable improvements as the GTX 1630 features a 1785 MHz boost clock compared to GTX 1050 Ti’s 1590 MHz.
NVIDIA’s board partners declared their prices for the GPU. The EVGA GeForce GTX 1630 SC is priced at $199 while the Colorful and Inno3D versions received a $169 price tag. Both these prices are way too overpriced and how exactly is NVIDIA justifying the increase in price from GTX 1050 Ti is still a mystery.
