Life isn’t worth regrets, so screw what people think and go for what you want. That’s the lesson I took from the two-episode finale of season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy while I was pinballing all over my emotions in the two-hour special.
With one missed wedding, three possible funerals, and five couples getting their romance on in the season 19 finale, it was hard to keep track of when I was happy and sad. But I’m still going to give you the recap and share what I expect from the next season of the ABC show.
1. Season 20 Speculation & Theories
Grey’s Anatomy still keeps us on our toes despite running for almost twenty seasons. After that cliffhanger finale with three lives in the balance and a few careers at Grey Sloan, I can’t believe we have to wait indefinitely for a new episode of the ABC show.
Season 20 is confirmed on the network, but we don’t know when it could drop. But I do have a positive update for one pressing question – will Teddy survive her “toothache,” and will we see her in the next season?
Well, Kim Raver is on the cast list for season 20, and considering she’s been such an essential and consistent character on the show, I’m guessing she’s not going anywhere. But we may see less of her for a few episodes, and the upcoming season needs to address what her ailment is. STAT!
Many couples got together, whether rekindling old flames or sparking new ones, and I’m also curious about what fates await them. Jo and Link have been one of my favorites, and their romantic rainy confession was the highlight of the season 19 finale for sure. But will they last despite realizing the love between them?
The only couple I’m feeling secure about is Taryn and Mika, not only because they’re the latest lovebirds on the block and thus have less drama between them. I mean, have you seen how cute the couple looks?!
Right now, I’m concerned about what repercussions will Simone’s abandoned wedding have on her rekindled relationship with Lucas. Oh, and speaking of old flames that were never quite put out, let me get to my next worry.
Nick and Meredith will definitely try getting back together, and Owen and Maggie have decided to stay married. However, they’re both on rocky ground with the distance and different career paths – will they overcome the hurdles and stick together despite them?
Teddy isn’t the only one we should be concerned about after the season 19 finale. Max may be conscious, but she’s still not home-free. Sam’s horrifying amount of blood loss concerns me, and I hope he makes it. Not because I like him but because otherwise, the residents are in for a career-ending punishment.
Other storylines that season 20 will definitely feature are Richard possibly falling off the wagon and what repercussions will Meredith’s findings on Alzheimer’s have on the doctor’s community. There’s a lot of ground to cover, so here’s hoping ABC gives us the new season soon.
2. Season 20 Release Date
ABC renewed the long-running show for a twentieth season, so Grey’s Anatomy season 20 is already greenlit. But no release windows or official dates have been confirmed, though we’ll keep you updated if there’s any news.

5. Episodes 19 & 20 Recap
Simone seemingly waits for Lucas to confess his feelings for her, but when they never come, she’s ready to walk down the aisle to Trey.
Until her dress tears, her flowers don’t show up, and her mother’s favorite bird crashes against the window and breaks its neck. The final nail in the marriage’s coffin? Her grandmother mistook her for her dead mother, telling her to marry Simone’s would-be father since her heart belonged to him.
Simone rushes out and drives down to Grey Sloan, falling into Lucas’ arms as they express their love. Meanwhile, at the wedding, Mika thanks Taryn for her help with Teddy and kisses her, and at Grey Sloan, Blue stands up for an overworked mother to explain her side when he child overdoses on Fentanyl. He wins the debate, but when Max celebrates with him, something goes wrong.
Part of the Grey Sloan doctors were flying to Boston for the Catherine Fox Award, and in the turbulence, we almost lost half our cast. In the chaos, Amelia and Winston hold hands, Richard almost falls off the wagon, and Nick thinks only of Meredith in his possible last moments.
Reaching Boston, they visit Meredith, who discusses her Alzheimer’s research, which puts every other thesis, including Derek’s, to moot.
They ask her to keep it on the down low for the time being, but she spills it at a table full of donors. Nick ends up meeting Michael at Grey’s, but when he recalls it in front of Meredith, she explains she’s not involved with him.
Meredith confesses she misses Nick, and he comes clean about how he wants her despite everything, and they kiss. Later, Meredith presents the award instead of Bailey, who’s actually the award’s recipient. After Amelia leaves, Richard orders a martini, but does he actually drink it?
Jules reprimands Blue for going against Max’s wishes, saying she hates him for that but can’t help but love him for saving her favorite person. Meanwhile, Sam’s still laying his flirty charm on Jo, aggravating Link, who passionately confesses to her, and they’re finally a couple.
Trey gets into an accident chasing Simone, and when he’s driven to Grey Sloan, he punches Lucas at sight. Simone explains to him she didn’t leave Trey for Adams but for herself.
Teddy attends to Sam for his life-saving surgery with the other residents, but she suddenly collapses, her “toothache” leaving her unconscious without a pulse. Sam crashes into code blue, and the interns try and operate without the attendant as the finale ends on a cliffhanger.
