Back in 2019 at Anime Expo, WIT Studio announced that they would be releasing a studio original ‘Great Pretender’ in summer 2020. Despite the production issues from COVID-19, they delivered on time and the anime aired as per its schedule.
The official website for WIT Studio, the studio animating the series, started streaming the anime’s second promotional video recently. The anime will now premiere on July 8 on Fuji TV’s +UItra programming block.
The first season of The Great Pretender will have a total of 23 episodes. It has been split into two cours, the first of which consists of 14 episodes. Chiaki Kobayashi, Junichi Suwabe, & Natsumi Fujiwara are the voice actors for the main characters.
The Great Pretender’s first season has been split into “cases”. The first 3 cases, were released as per this schedule:
- Case 1 (Episodes 1-5) – June 2
- Case 2 (Episodes 6-10) – June 9
- Case 3 (Episodes 11-14) – June 16
Netflix will stream this anime exclusively worldwide. However, the episodes are currently region-locked to Japan. The release date for the 15th episode, titled “Wizard of Far East (Case 4.1),” has not yet been announced.
A manga adaptation for the anime also started on June 10. It is illustrated by Daichi Marui and is available for reading on Mag Garden’s Mag Comi website and LINE Manga service.
About Great Pretender
Great Pretender is an original Japanese anime television series produced by Wit Studio, directed by Hiro Kaburagi and written by Ryota Kosawa.
The series revolves around Makoto Edamura and Kudo, a duo of partners in crime who are supposedly Japan’s greatest swindlers/con-artists. They try to trick a Frenchman, but they get out-swindled by him as he turns out to be Laurent Thierry, a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias.
A bigger picture opens for Edamura once he starts getting engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs.
