Here comes another original anime this year. It’s a rarity to have shows which are not adapted from a manga or a light novel.
Great Pretender will be a ‘happy and comedic drama between world-famous swindlers’ with the tag of ‘credit fraud’ attached to it.
By the looks of the hype and premise of the show, it certainly sounds intriguing and catchy. The release date isn’t far away so let’s just hope there are no delays coming up.

1. Release Date & Announcement
Back in 2019 at Anime Expo, WIT Studio announced that they will be releasing a studio original ‘Great Pretender’ in summer 2020, and they kept their promise.
The anime is set to release on June 2 on Netflix Japan and will be broadcast on July 8 in Japan. It will be a split cour anime consisting of 23 episodes in total.
2. Theory Section
In this section, I will talk about various aspects of the show, which will include the likes of; which studio is adapting it, what we can expect from it, and about the creator.
Basically, every technicality which will affect the production of the anime.
I. About the Studio
The famous WIT Studio. They became an instant hit through Attack on Titan.
After the release of Vinland Saga, the studio gained overwhelming popularity worldwide. Known for fantastic aesthetics, the studio certainly stands out even amongst Japan’s best anime studios. WIT Studio has great credentials leaving only the writing to be mastered.
II. What can you expect?
The show’s theme is ‘to deceit people for money,’ and that’s why our protagonists are swindlers. People who are into heart-throbbing drama, light action, comedy and some eye catching animation, are likely to appreciate this one most of all.

III. About the Creators
The project director of the series is none other than Hiro Kaburagi. He is known for his directorial work in ‘Kimi ni Todoke’ and ’91 Days’ – both benefiting from fantastic direction.
The story is written by Ryota Kosawa. He is known for his manga ’60-sai no love letter,’ and for his work in ‘Always Sanchome no Yuhi,’ he also won the Best Screenplay Award.
You’ll also be pleased to know that Yutaka Yamada is in charge of music. Known for his fabulous work in Tokyo Ghoul and Vinland Saga, this title is full of promise.
3. Production Update
WIT Studio gave the people one more reason to live when they announced at Anime Expo 2019; that they were working on an original anime. Expectations, needless to say, are running high .
An original coming from such an outstanding studio creates hype on it’s own. It still has a month and a half to go before it streams on Netflix, but there’s no shortage of anticipation. There is a catch though. Only 14 episodes are confirmed to roll on the platform in the following order:
- Case 1 (Episodes 1-5) – June 2
- Case 2 (Episodes 6-10) – June 9
- Case 3 (Episodes 11-14) – June 16
4. Manga Adaptation
The official website for Wit Studio’s original series ‘Great Pretender’ announced that artist Daichi Marui will be launching a manga adaptation of the anime by the same name.
It will be available on MAGComi, a website of Mag Garden which is a subsidiary of Production IG, on June 10. The manga will also be published on LINE Manga service by the same date only.
The first compiled book volume of the manga will be shipped on July 10 too.
5. Key Visual
A new visual with the characters Edamame Masato, Etomura, Laurent Thierry, Abigail Jones (Abby), and Paula Dickins was also released.
Everything that is apart from the main characters is turned into gold, that’s something to ponder, isn’t it?
5. Trailer
The official trailer dropped a few days ago only.
The animation, vibrant color palettes, fast-paced action-chase sequences and the beautiful ladies, this promises to be a hell of a ride. Buckle up!

7. About Great Pretender
Together with Kudo, Makoto Edamura is the greatest swindler Japan has ever seen. But it all comes down when the duo tries their hands on a French man in Asakusa, they were tricked.
The Frenchman they tried to deceit was apparently The ‘Laurent Thierry’ – a higher level confidence man, in control of the mafias.
And after having engaged in Laurent’s dirty jobs, Edamura’s fate seems to have changed, not for better.
