When it first launched, the New World beta had faced quite a bit of controversy as many players reported their brand new graphics cards were being bricked when playing the game. It seems this issue has now returned as similar reports are starting to pop up once again.
Even for the beta of a game, faulty launches such as this can highly damage its reputation. Due to the GPU bricking fiasco, many are now questioning if the game is even safe to play. This will have a marked effect on the number of people who decide to play the game once it officially releases.
The news of the reports comes from PC manufacturer PowerGPU, who stated that the issue seems to be only affecting those players who do not cap the framerate. While this may seem like an issue people can solve on their own, it’s not commonly known how one can limit the framerate before booting up the game. PowerGPU shared on their Twitter account:
This is also not a stand-alone incident. One Redditor reported that their new PC with a 3080Ti GPU ended up bricked when they tried to boot up the game for a second time. Other people in the comments are also voicing their frustration with a user named MK18_Ocelot, saying,
I capped mine at 60FPS and was fine for about 3 hours until I went to bed. Woke up this morning, upped the cap to 90 and black screened within about 30 minutes.

These reports seem to suggest that merely capping your framerate might not be enough to save you from this issue. PowerGPU has shared a way to do this before you launch the game and risk damaging your rig.
The complaints sound eerily similar to those we faced in summer during the New World closed beta. One player stated, “Playing the New World beta on my EVGA 3090 has fried my graphics card completely. There are many accounts of this same thing happening with the same card with the same game.”
During the summer of complaints, New World managed to survive the backlash and PR nightmare as it was claimed that it was not the game to blame but rather a faulty batch of GPUs.
This theory was supported when EVGA stated that “poor workmanship” was the cause of the bricked RTX 3090s and said that it was due to faulty soldering. However, it seems this time the same defense can’t be used, and New World may be in some serious trouble.
