Warner Bros. Games Montréal just announced the next title in the Batman series, Gotham Knights, and it very well is the game where the franchise’s protagonist is dead.
In the recent DC Fandom Livestream, WB Games Montréal announced the next game in the Batman series, Gotham Knights, and it takes place in a world where Batman is no more.
He is succeeded by his four protegees Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood, and the gang teams up to take back Gotham city from the scum that is enveloping it.
The announcement has led to massive hype among fans as the last release, Batman: Arkham Knight, came out in 2015, and the wait has been going on ever since.
Still, the departure of our beloved masked vigilante is shocking to many, even though Arkham Knight’s ending foreshadows it.
WB Games Montréal has been teasing Gotham Knights since last year as they initially released symbols that referenced the Court of Owls with the tagline “Capture the Knight.”
In January, they posted on Twitter, the Gotham City Police Department logo with the caption “redacted.” Just last week, the word came back, as WB Games created a website called ‘r3dakt3d.com’ as a teaser to the new game.
Even though the contents were hidden behind a series of four codes that were going to be revealed on different days, Fans decrypted them to find that Batgirl would be part of Gotham Knights, as is now announced.
The Canadian studio confirmed in the trailer that in this game’s universe, Batman is dead, making room for four new playable characters that will be succeeding the knight. The trailer shows that you’ll have to stop the Court of Owls and possibly Mr. Freeze.
“The team is thrilled to announce Gotham Knights and share our work in bringing a different story of the DC Super Heroes to the forefront”
Patrick Redding, Creative Director, Warner Bros.
“We’re looking forward to fans playing and enjoying a lot of action as this new guard of strong DC Super Heroes in Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin, while solving an original mystery set against a living, breathing Gotham City.”

Gotham Knights take place in a world where Batman is no more. He is succeeded by his four protegees Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood, the gang teams up to take back Gotham city from the scum that is enveloping it.
As shown in the gameplay footage, players will be able to utilize each of the four protagonists’ skill sets to take down enemies; it will be interesting to see what each character brings to the table.
4. Will Gotham Knights Be Multiplayer?
Yes, the new title by WB Games will be a multiplayer one. Through co-op mode, players can play with their friends. In the gameplay trailer, this is portrayed, albeit in a very subtle way by the ‘Robin has joined in the session’ in the top right corner.
5. How To Play Multiplayer In Gotham Knights?
Up to 2 players can play together in the co-op mode of Gotham Knights. Sadly you cannot play together as a group of 4 with your friends with each of the new characters. Split screen is also not available.
6. What’s the Storyline in Gotham Knights?
After Batman’s death, it’s up to his four protegees, Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin, to rise as the protectors of Gotham City.
With Batman gone, the underworld has been spewing out criminals onto the streets of Gotham, non-stop. It’s clear from the trailer that you’ll have to stop the Court of Owls and possibly Mr. Freeze.
7. Connection To Previous Arkham Games
Gotham Knights is not going to be connected to the previous titles of the franchise. The latest WB game will be kicking off its own unique universe.
8. No More Batcave, Welcome to the Belfry
The new game takes place in the all too familiar streets and alleys of Gotham City with new hideouts and rooftops to discover.
Though, players will notice that the gang is not operating from the Batcave, which was supposedly destroyed with the death of Batman. Now their base of operation is the Belfry.
The Belfry was first seen in 2016 and was introduced as a school for Batman to train superheroes while Batwoman handled the daily operations.
It doubles as a base for the team called the Gotham Knights consisting of Batman, Batwoman, Clayface, Orphan , Spoiler (another former Batgirl), Red Robin, Batwing, and Azrael. It’s clear that this team-up somewhat inspired WB for their next Batman game.
In the comics, the Belfry resembles the deck from Star Trek, but we’re yet to see WB’s implementation.
“In [Detective Comics #935], we’re introducing a new secondary Batcave that’s going to be in Gotham City. It’s called the Belfry, and it is the – honestly, I got to sit down and design my own Batcave from scratch. And it’s honestly one of the coolest things. When I saw the pages come in from Eddy Barrows designing it for the first time, I was just floored. This feels like a new iconic setting in Gotham City, and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
James Tynion IV, Writer, June 2016.
9. Gotham Knights Character Details
Tim Drake, the expert fighter with a collapsible quarterstaff and stealth skills, will be the Robin in Gotham Knights. Barbara Gordon, a skilled hacker with her melee tonfa, trained in kickboxing, capoeira, and jiu-jitsu, will be the Batgirl.
Dick Grayson, the Nightwing, was the first Robin, eldest in the Batman family and Batman’s protégé.
He is a master acrobat and wields his signature dual Escrima Sticks. Jason Todd is the Red Hood, and similar to the comics he is an anti-hero, owing to the fact he was resurrected. He’s the only one to wield guns.

- Christopher Sean voices Nightwing
- Stephen Oyoung voices red Hood

As some previous titles already showcased, Gotham Knights will also include multiple bad guys; one of them is going to be Mr. Freeze, a cryogenics expert and the product of a laboratory accident that shackled him to a cryogenic suit for life.
Mr. Freeze has previously attempted to attack by freezing all of Gotham in the comics. In the 2017-2018 miniseries Batman: White Knight, Mr. Freeze constructs a freeze cannon under a lighthouse in Gotham City.
Harley Quinn discovers the plan and takes over to freeze the city herself, leaving Mr. Freeze and Batgirl to team up and save the city. This sort of alliance might not come up in the latest games, but nothing can be said.
