It has been a long time since we saw the band of intergalactic outlaws in Guardians of the Galaxy go on bizarre adventures and fight villains to Star Lord’s perfect playlist playing in the back.
Marvel fans will finally get to see the Guardians return to the MCU later this year with a cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder, which will be followed by a TV special holiday film on Disney+, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
If you’re wondering how a Holiday special would matter in the grand scheme of things—just know that it is canon, and the events in the film will be connected to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
You can expect a full-blown crazy, out-of-this-world (literally) adventure as director/writer James Gunn has previously stated that the third film will mark the end of the journey for his vision of Guardians.
So here’s everything you need to know about The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special:
What is the Holiday Special about?
Plot details about the special are still under wraps. However, it is so closely connected to Guardians Vol. 3 that Gunn revealed that he’s filming the two projects simultaneously. So, one can expect the storyline to flow seamlessly between the two.
Officially bringing the Guardians into the fold of Phase Four and its multiversal madness, the special will fill the gaps between the second and third Guardians installments and take place between Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gunn has also mentioned that he was inspired by the Star Wars Holiday Special for this one.
Who is in it?
After almost five years, the special will reunite the Guardians cast, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, and Sean Gunn.
Although not much is known about new characters, in reply to a fan tweet, Gunn promised that “more than one great new MCU characters will be introduced” in the Holiday special.
As it is common knowledge, Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji will both have important roles in Guardians Vol. 3, so it remains to be seen whether the film will introduce them before that.
One can never tell with the MCU; it’s all connected.
Release Date and Where to Stream it
The special will be a TV Special film that will premiere on Disney+. TV Specials usually have a runtime of 90 minutes, so rest assured, we’ll be getting a detailed new adventure.
Although The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special does not have a premiere date yet, Marvel’s official website has its estimated release set for Holidays 2022, around Christmas time.
So to follow the order in which we’ll get to see the outlaws again—Thor: Love and Thunder comes out on July 8, 2022, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special sometime in December 2022, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023.
And if this still isn’t enough to have you longing desperately for the special, Gunn recently told The Radio Times.
The Holiday Special is the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s totally ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it.
