House of the Dragon Showrunner Says Spinoff is Succession with Dragons

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal states that fans are right to assume that the GoT prequel is just HBO’s Succession set in a fantasy world in a much different time.

The spinoff/prequel, created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin, will be set in Westeros 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, depicting the Dance of the Dragons, a civil war that spelled the end of the Iron Throne’s royal family, House of Targaryen.

The 2022 fantasy drama will premiere on HBO Max on August 21, 2022, and stars Paddy Considine as Viserys I Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Craney as Aegon II Targaryen, and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.

Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who has previously given viewers some of the fan-favorite episodes of GoT, the action-adventure series will follow a family torn apart in a civil war, relatives bond by blood shedding the same in the name of power. Sound familiar?

Ryan Condal, HOTD Showrunner, has confirmed in an interview with SFX (Via GamesRadar) that the fans’ comparisons of House of the Dragon to HBO’s 2018 drama series Succession are accurate.

This, however, is the Dance of the Dragons. It’s a civil war that happens within a singular family, which in a way makes it much more engrossing and tragic because you see people who are blood relatives turning against each other and going to war.

The writer has also revealed that the GoT prequel takes heavy inspiration from HBO’s Succession and Netflix’s The Crown.

Yeah, I think that’s a great metaphor, and the things we referenced in the [writers’] room the most were The Crown and Succession, just as tonal analogs and as shows that we, the writers, were enjoying and immersed in. The original Game of Thrones is really the War of the Roses, with two separate families that never liked each other in the first place going at it.

So essentially, both shows showcase a family going to war with each other in the name of power, recognition, and a literal and metaphorical Iron Throne. The only difference, when it boils down to it, is the presence of dragons. Hopefully, House of the Dragon will take after its predecessor (Game of Thrones) and its inspiration (Succession) and rake in positive reviews from audiences and critics along with several awards.
