House of the Dragon Wraps Filming, But Doesn’t Have a Release Date Yet

Dracarys! The dragons are one step closer to flight.

House of the Dragon, the HBO prequel series to Game of Thrones, has finally wrapped up filming.

George R.R. Martin made the announcement via his blog, Not A Blog, that production on the very first season of the big spinoff had officially concluded.

Exciting news out of London — I am informed that shooting has WRAPPED for the first season of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them.

The author mentioned that it was far from done as the series now goes into post-production but also had a lot of praises for co-showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.

But the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do. My hat is off to Ryan and Miguel and their team, and to our amazing cast.

Principal photography for House of the Dragon commenced in April 2021 on locations in the UK, Spain, California, and Portugal. It was met with a few covid-related delays in the process.

Martin added that he didn’t know when the Dragons would ‘dance’ either, but fans can expect an update soon.

While talking to Deadline, HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys explained why the team behind the series is cautious about announcing a release date.

One of the reasons why we’re trying to be cautious about it is when you’re shooting a show that big during a pandemic, especially with the last round [with] a lot of crew and cast members… you didn’t know who was going to drop out or if we’re going to have to shut down, so we just didn’t want to declare a date and then find ourselves shut down.

Bloys also added that with production wrapping up, they’re currently trying to figure out the best time to launch the spinoff.

Now that we are out of production, I think that we will talk to their guys and figure out what we want to do in terms of announcing a date. But I was just trying to make sure that we didn’t come out with a date that we couldn’t meet for something that was out of our control.

As there are going to be a lot more than just three dragons in the show, post-production is going to be one hell of a monumental task.

It is safe to assume that House of the Dragon will most likely come out in the last quarter of 2022.
