He spoke about Shikishima and how he was able to make up for his past regrets when he dealt with Godzilla the second time. The director hinted that the sequel could build up to a larger saga and give more insights about whether Godzilla was actually defeated.

Read Yamazaki’s quote below:

“I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state of peace and calm – but perhaps [it’s the] calm before the storm, and the characters have not yet been forgiven for what has been imposed upon them.”

The ending of Godzilla Minus One left a lot of scope for a sequel. The film ends with the remains of Godzilla beginning to regenerate. It hinted that the monster’s return is possible. Therefore, Godzilla may not have been defeated yet.
