The ninth installation of the God of War game series, Ragnarok, was released in 2022 and despite immense pressure, it truly managed to delight fans with its sharp narrative and gameplay. This game developed its characters so well, that players had an immersive experience like no other!
Like it’s 2018 release, God of War Ragnarok too ends with an alluring end-credits roll that features a mysterious mural. For gamers who are hungry for the next edition, this mural will keep them on their toes as they try to figure out what it means.
But if you have no patience to unravel the mystery all by yourself, I’ve got your covered!
The last mural in God of War Ragnarok depicts worshippers adoring Kratos’ gigantic gold statue. This makes him realize that eventually the mortals will revere him as a god deserving of his legacy and the game ends with Kratos being emotional about this prophecy.
After playing the games, you will know that these murals mostly appear to either tease future storylines or to give more in-depth knowledge about the current narrative. In the case of Kratos, this finale mural is somewhat of an endearing epilogue that rewards the hero after all the hardships he’s gone through.
So how did we get to this mural?
Well, at the end of the game after Asgard has gone through Ragnarok, Atreus wakes up back on Midgard and literally goes down a memory lane, meeting many of his allies who previously helped him defeat Odin. This in itself is a great way to end the game!
The cherry of the top is that when Atreus reaches Kratos, Angrboda tells them there’s something they need to see. These are the murals!
The first mural is of Faye, who seems to be fighting against her own people — indicating how Faye turned away from her folks, so that Kratos and Atreus could be safer and walk their path of destiny. This moves Ateus who tells his father that he needs to find the rest of the giants. They then share an emotional good bye.
Kratos, now all alone with his thoughts, discovers another set of panels. The first one depicts the events of the 2018 game, the second one has images from God of War Ragnarok, while the third (and last) one has Kratos immortalized as a god.
Seeing himself being worshiped by mortals makes Kratos very emotional. He never believed his actions would be redeemed, nor did he think anyone would understand what drove him to make the decisions he did. But this mural is proof that there is still hope for him in the future.
As such, he vows to hold himself more accountable to taking care of the Nine Realms.
While we don’t know if we’ll see more of Kratos and the effect this mural will have on him, it’s a pretty majestic note to leave God of War Ragnarok on!
