God of War: Ragnarok has been the talk of the town ever since the PlayStation Showcase a week before. While many have been breaking down the trailer and wondering what we can expect from the new game, the director has revealed more information regarding some of the equipment Kratos will have at his disposal.
In an interview with YouTuber Jon Ford, God of War: Ragnarok director Eric Williams stated that there would be many shields Kratos can find and use in the sequel.
I don’t want to go too deep on it, but yes, there are different shields, and they have different defensive options and abilities. The reason we’re doing this is we really want to open up expressive choice to the way that you build your Kratos, like the equipment and loadout and things like that.
Eric Williams, Game Director
In God of War 2018, Kratos had access to just one shield throughout the game. You could apply some skins to it, but the skills remained the same. While players could use the shield during combat, it wasn’t a weapon of choice for most. The game developers appear to want to change that perception of the shield, as now we will be getting a variety to choose from.
Combat in the previous game revolved around skill trees for each weapon and equipping runes to armor and weapons for added buffs. While the shield had a skill tree, it was quite basic, and no rune slot was made available.
With shields now becoming more of an offensive weapon in Ragnarok, we may see them get a much more fleshed-out skill tree and the ability to hold runes for bonus effects.
God of War: Ragnarok is going to be one of the biggest releases of next year. The gameplay trailer revealed during the PlayStation Showcase event has already gotten the hype train going. We also found out that our main antagonists in this game are Thor and Freya.
Freya’s situation is the most mysterious, as Mimir in the previous game had stated that Odin had cursed the Vanir goddess so she could not attack or hurt anyone, even in self-defense. Yet, in the trailer, we see her attacking Kratos as he and Atreus are traveling on a dog-sled.
Ragnarok is the final installment in the Norse saga for Kratos and Atreus. Cory Barlog, the former God of War director, stated that Sony Santa Monica is ending the overarching story of the current saga because development was taking too long. He said that if every God of War game took 5 years, a trilogy would be completed in 15, and that is a bit too long of a timeline.
