Even though God of War Ragnarok is releasing in two months, there is little we know about the gameplay. Sony dropped a gameplay trailer last year, but since then, developers have been tight lipped about new features and changes.
New gameplay details have revealed the combat abilities for Kratos and Atreus, introducing a new element system tied to weapons and new defense options using shields.
The new mechanism seems like the 2018 prequel God of War’s action AI has been tweaked for a unique combat system. In combat, the camera switches to an over-the-shoulder point of view for a closer look, similar to Resident Evil 4. Players can switch to bare hands to increase the stun meter of enemies.
God of War Ragnarok will feature the return of the two major weapons from the earlier game, the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. However, the weapons have been redesigned for extra functionality and new shields will allow players to choose what they need at any situation in battle.
There will be a new elemental system for the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. Players will be able to infuse ice with the axe, and fire with the blades. These weapons together make up Weapon Signature Moves, a sequence of moves performed by pressing the triangle button.
Lead Combat Designers Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh explained the combat was designed to go further than God of War and build on the premise of the original game.
There will be two different shields for defense, one for utility in quick parries and movement called the Dauntless Shield, and the other, focused on slower-paced, defensive combat, called the Stonewall Shield.
Both these shields will give players the option to decide how they want to act in a battle, similar to the Dark Souls series. The developers also confirmed there will be more shields than just those two.
Given the new combat details, fans are excited to see what else the sequel has to offer. God of War Ragnarok releases on November 9, 2022, for PS4 and PS5.
