God of War is Not One of the Ten Sony IPs Getting a TV Show/Movie

According to a report by The New York Times, and contrary to popular rumors, God of War fans will not be seeing Kratos in a movie or TV show anytime soon.

The formula of adapting video games for movies and tv shows was, until recently, frowned upon as it almost always led to a sub-par result (looking at you Max Payne, Warcraft, and Prince of Persia). However, with the recent successes of Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Witcher, film and TV studios are once again turning to video games for their next big hit.

Currently, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment are developing ten of PlayStation’s most successful IPs for movies and TV. The first in line is an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted starring Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Sully. The film has already gained significant traction seeing that it’s Holland’s second time playing a pop culture icon, with his first outing being Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spiderman.

The Last Of Us is also being adapted into what is now a highly anticipated TV show for HBO Max. The show will be developed by the Emmy-winning creator of Chernobyl, Craig Mazin, and will star Pedro Pascal (Narcos, The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) as Joel and Ellie respectively.

Now, most would expect that since Sony has already put up two of it’s most iconic titles for adaptation, God of War would get a nod too as it is one of Sony’s most recent genre-defining successes. But evidently, that is not the case. According to a Sony spokesperson as mentioned in the NYT report, God of War is not one of the ten games receiving an adaptation and will not be getting one anytime soon.

Although, it’s not like God of War fans have nothing to be excited about. As of the time of writing, God of War: Ragnarok, the follow-up to Sony’s 2018 mega-hit God of War, remains set for a 2021 release. However, any announcements on a release date remain scant as Sony continues to keep things on Kratos’ next adventure heavily under wraps. Apart from the cryptic teaser that dropped almost a year ago, the new game has seen no major updates.

Whispers abound that developers Sony Santa Monica were very inspired by The Last of Us 2 during the development of Ragnarok; The Last of Us 2 had players play as not just the protagonist Ellie but also as the antagonist Abbie. In a chat on the God of War podcast, a developer hinted that Ragnarok, like TLOU2, will have players play not just as Kratos but as his son Atreus as well. You can read all about that in the story we’ve linked for you below.
