God of High School Episode 9 Review: What Did You Miss?

The God of High School, by Yongje Park, is a famous Korean manhwa webtoon that’s currently being made into an anime. It is gaining widespread popularity thanks to its fast-paced story and well-animated fight scenes.

Episode 8 of “God of High School” titled “Curse/Cornered,” was released on Monday.

With the main trio in action, all in different ways, it featured some of the best fights since the beginning.

With two main events, i.e. Taejin’s rescue, and fight in the Nationals occurring, we will see Mori trying to race against time right off the bat.

In this article, I will be discussing every single fight and event that took place and lay down my predictions for the next one!

1. Episode 8 Recap

Episode 8, titled “Close/Friend,” covered chapters 55 to 60 of the Season 2 of God of High School webtoon and began with the next match in the Nationals.

We also saw the conclusion of the match between South Gyeongsang and North Jeolla.

With Taek Jegal, the former team leader going berserk, two of the Jeolla district’s members were fatally injured and barely escaped with their lives.

The remaining one surrendered, and thus South Gyeongsang took the win.

After the electric opening song, we directly saw the second match in Group A between South Jeolla and South Chungcheong, with the latter clinching victory.

This episode also revealed Jin Taejin’s abduction. As Mori was sitting alone, Ilpyo made his appearance, which resulted in a quick skirmish between them, ending in a draw.

Later on, Mori asked him about the tiger symbol on his back, which resembled Taejin’s military uniform.

In answer, we saw a flashback as Ilpyo reiterated his sob story, sorry, tragic past, where Taejin met and handed him a book containing Taekkyon secrets.

While both Mori and Ilpyo were reminiscing, Taek Jegal attacked them.

It seems as if he shared some history with the Taekkyon user, and after a small showdown, he went his way.

Soon after, Ilpyo took his leave too, as Mori sat there frustrated with his lack of power.

While this was happening, as commissioner Q confronted Park Mujin, we found out that what Nox killed were mere puppets, and Sim Bongsa’s family was safe.

After this, the next scenes showed Daewi asking Q to teach him how to use Charyeok, and Mori desperately training himself.

This was perfectly in accordance with the next scene, as the main antagonists for this arc – Nox, were shown to officially move out to destroy the “key.”

With both the “heroes” and “villains” powering up, it was finally time to go to war.

However, this episode had not ended yet, as we saw Mira, Daewi, and Mori celebrating the latter’s birthday.

With emotional flashbacks, hilarious moments, and classic “I want to fight you” declarations, this small celebration was a success.

While “God of High School” could have ended it here, they, of course, did not do so and trampled on our hearts once again.

The last scene put a dampener on our moods, as Mori opened a letter and found the picture of his grandfather chained up.

I’ve explained these events in greater detail in this article: God of High School Episode 8 Review: What did you miss?

Episode 9 follows Mori as he tries to save his grandfather, and on the other side, we continue onwards with the next fight in the “GOH” Nationals.

2. Episode 9 Review

Episode 9, titled “Curse/Cornered,” covered chapters 61 to 69 of the Season 2 of God of High School webtoon showed Mori going to save his grandfather in a race against time as the GOH tournament started with the Seoul team fighting against the Jeju team.

I. Jin Taejin’s Rescue

The episode began with an emotional flashback, which showed us Mori clinging onto his grandfather as he was leaving, and also gave us the backstory regarding the picture of them in his flat.

With that done, we were taken back to the moment Jin Taejin was attacked and taken captive, and the very next scene brought us back to the present where Mori was racing against time to rescue his grandfather.

As he reached the place where Taejin was being kept captive and found him bound up, the latter turned out to be an imposter.

This twist did not really shock us as much since it was expected due to the ease in which he found him.

What did shock us was that the fake grandpa exploded, and the next scene showed Mori lying on the ground.

At this time, the enemy, aka the one responsible for the whole charade, made his appearance.

With his skill Doppelganger, he surrounded Mori with his clones. During this time, the latter found the Jeju team members’ corpses and found out that the ones Mira was fighting against were imposters.

With no option left due to his exhausted state, Mori rushed at them after using an acupressure technique to feel no pain for one hour. With this, the scene shifted to the Nationals.

II. Nationals

With the last episode concluding the second match between South Jeolla and South Chungcheong, this one directly picked up with the next match between Seoul and Jeju team.

As Mori had not yet arrived, Mira went up against Lee Marin in the first bout.

This was a very difficult matchup for Mira as Marin’s body was slicked with tanning oil, making it difficult for her to land an attack.

However, she managed to find a rhythm, and after a barrage of attacks, her opponent finally yielded a sword, and guess which one? – The National Treasure, Fengxian that belonged to Mira! (It was taken away by her “Fiance,” remember?)

With such a great sword in his hand, he easily broke Mira’s weapon and continuously hacked at her, not giving his opponent a moment to react.

However, thanks to his constant (and annoying) trash talk, Mira found the chance to use her swordless form attacks to lay down three great attacks in succession and take back her sword, well, for a second, that is.

While this was happening, Daewi, searching for Mori, stumbled upon South Gyeongsang’s team member Bora, who attacked and overpowered him for a while.

After refocusing himself, he stopped her attacks and continued with his search, when she kissed him (yes, you heard that right) and got ready to attack.

With a timely appearance from Jegal, she stopped, and all of them went their separate ways.

Back to the match, as Marin stood up once again, the sword disappeared and reappeared in his hand.

As the National Treasure recognized the tan-oil guy as its owner, it could not be used by anyone else as long as he willed it.

With it, he wounded Mira as we saw the first splash of blood in the episode.

While being constantly overwhelmed, with a final attack, it seemed as if Mira would lose; however, this realization and feelings of weakness triggered what we all wanted to see since the concept was introduced.

Yes, Mira finally awakened her charyeok after a dramatic dialogue between the two in her mind.

To reach up to Mori and Daewi and become unparalleled, she manifested the charyeok of the great hero – Lu Bu Fengxian.

With this ability, she gained ownership over the sword as well, which appeared in her hands.

While Marin also showed his own charyeok, Kraken, he was no match for Mira, who defeated him within moments with her National Treasure sword and overpowered abilities.

With the first bout won, an exhausted Mira almost fell down on the arena, but as a master of dramatic appearances, Mori arrived just in time to catch her.

After they both shared an affectionate version of “I’m home, you’re here,” he faced his opponent in round two.

With Daewi’s comment on Mori being the angriest he had seen him, and the latter’s badass no-nonsense face, the anticipation built up all at once.

With three minutes only before the ending of the episode, we were shown the most epic battles of all time.

As his opponent attacked, Mori countered using his three consecutive kicks and punches and wounded him terribly.

What had literal goosebumps forming on our arms was the parallel between his opponent and Paylong, as they were both getting absolutely demolished by Mori’s original Blue Dragon and Twin Blue Dragon Kicks.

As the match concluded, the episode ended on a high note as The Six watching it were reminded of Taejin after looking at Mori. A tiger did indeed raise another tiger.

3. Episode 10 Predictions

The next episode will probably show us Mori’s worn down condition after using his no-pain pressure technique and the introduction of a new Nox character.

We will also see the next few quick matches in the finals, as more details about the “Key” will be revealed.
