Gintama is one of the most famous manga and anime series with a long-running record. The funny adventures of Gintoki, the freelance samurai, don’t fail to interest us. The odd jobs and running gags are what makes the series stand out from the rest of the mangas of similar genres.
A new anime special will soon be added to the list of anime-inspired by the Gintama manga. This new anime special will air exclusively in Japan on dTV, the online streaming service. The schedule is unconfirmed yet, but is slated to air in “early 2021”.
According to a tweet by the Weekly Shonen Jump, this new anime edition will tie into the new anime movie based on Gintama, which will also be released sometime in “early 2021”.
The widely famed manga started serialization in 2003 and ended in 2019, with a total of 77 volumes in distribution. The manga was then adapted into an anime series, which first broadcasted in 2006 and ended in 2018 with 367 episodes and 6 OVA. The franchise even extends to two animation films and two live-action films.
Crunchyroll purchased the streaming rights and home video rights of the anime. The manga has been licensed in North America by Viz Media. Hulu began streaming the first 49 episodes of Gintama with English dub.
The greatest strength of Gintama is the unique gags that run amok in the manga. Quite often, it references other manga by Shonen as well as makes fun of Shonen. It also references Japanese culture and traditions. Gintama blends the sci-fi genre along with the samurai action quite well.
A visual teaser for the upcoming anime edition has been released:
Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama is thus quite a famed series all over the world and is still growing in popularity. The number of anime adaptations also reflects on its demand.
It is therefore very natural that the news of a new anime special release will excite the fans. We must wait for further updates from Gintama’s creators on the final dates and information of the broadcast.
About Gintama
The story is set in an alternate-history late-Edo period, where humanity is attacked by aliens called “Amanto.” Edo Japan’s samurai fight to defend Earth, but the shōgun cowardly surrenders when he realizes the aliens’ power.
He agrees to an unequal contract with the aliens, placing a ban on carrying swords in public and allowing the invaders to enter the country.
The samurai’s swords are confiscated, and the Tokugawa bakufu becomes a puppet government. The series focuses on an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata, who works as an odd-jobs freelancer. Although the story is mostly episodic, a few story arcs and recurring antagonists develop.
