The last (and ‘the very final’) installment of Gintama aired in 2021, and the almost two-decade-old franchise ended, leaving fans heartbroken. Now fans have a chance to give a proper farewell to their Gintama.
On Monday, a farewell visual for the Gintama Post-Anime Festival was released, almost a month after the festival’s announcement. This visual is different from the one released during the announcement.
The new visual shows the main characters of Gintama – the Yorozuya (Gintoki, Shinpachi, Kagura, and Sadaharu), The Joi warriors Katsura and Shinsuke Takasugi with Elizabeth, and the Shinsengumi (Kondo, Hijikata, and Okita). Elizabeth holds a board with “Ato no Matsuri” written on it.
Although the name is tentative, “Ato no Matsuri” does mean “After Festival”, referring to the occasion. The event will be held at Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena in Tokyo on March 19, 2023.
This venue has been used six times since 2010 for Gintama events, bringing fans a sense of nostalgia.

The voice cast for the anime series will also make an appearance. Tomokazu Sugita(Gintoki), Daisuke Sakaguchi (Shinpachi), Rie Kugemiya (Kagura), and many more from the cast will be present.
Rock Band DOES, who sang a few theme songs for Gintama before, will also perform at the festival. Tickets for the event start at 5500 yen for a box seat and up to 9900 yen for an S seat. Since Monday, they have been accepting advance lottery applications for tickets.
Gintama surely left all of us with happy memories and was certainly one of a kind when it came to nonsensical humor. We can expect the festival to be a great success as it reunites everyone for one final goodbye.
About Gintama
The story is set in an alternate-history late-Edo period, where humanity is attacked by aliens called ‘Amanto.’ Edo Japan’s samurai fight to defend Earth, but the shōgun cowardly surrenders when he realizes the aliens’ power.
He agrees to an unequal contract with the aliens, placing a ban on carrying swords in public and allowing the invaders to enter the country.
The samurai’s swords are confiscated, and the Tokugawa bakufu becomes a puppet government.
The series focuses on an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata, who works as an odd-jobs freelancer. Although the story is mostly episodic, a few story arcs and recurring antagonists develop.
