We return to Jake and Neytiri’s life after a decade since the first film’s event in Avatar: The Way of the Water, and they’ve started a family of their own. With five children, three born to them and two adopted, Avatar 2 will explore their adventures with the added pressure of being parents.
Before venturing to watch the film, we thought you needed a debriefing on their children, especially one human child. Neytiri gave birth to three sons – Neteyam, Lo’ak, and Tuktirey, while Kiri was adopted from the Na’vi woman meant to be Grace Christine’s Avatar. The other adopted child of the Sully family, Spider, is human, and we’re here to tell you all about him.
Jack Champion, who you might remember seeing for a second in Avengers: Endgame, plays the role of Spider. Miles “Spider” Socorro is a youngster born in Hell’s Gate in the first film but was abandoned on Pandora, later found by the Sullys, who took him under their wing.
In an interview with D23, Champion talked a little about his character in Avatar 2 and how he even imbued some of his own traits on the character.
Spider is a high-energy, tough, fun kid. He thinks of himself as one of the Na’vi, even though he knows he has limitations that they don’t. I think I got to infuse some of my own light-heartedness and empathy into Spider. We both share a love of the outdoors and tree climbing. I even sent Margie pictures of me in our neighborhood trees during the audition process.
Champion also explained how the “younger generation is more accepting than the older generation,” hinting at Spider’s isolation from the other Na’vi and his closeness with his adopted siblings. The actor highlighted that Neytiri is the only one in his family who is still distant from him, owing to the fact that he isn’t one of them and a son of the cruel humans.
The Sullys have mostly accepted Spider into their family, except for Neytiri. She has a more complex relationship with him as she sees him as one of the people that killed her family and destroyed their home. The rest of the Na’vi people also don’t entirely accept him. The younger generation is more accepting than the older generation is.
Maybe Neytiri’s doubts and her reasons to keep a distance from her adopted human son don’t sound too off-base since we understand where she’s coming from, considering the humans were to blame for the destruction of their Hometree and the death of her father.
And here’s the kicker, Spider’s biological father is none other than Quaritch, who was the main antagonist in the previous film and is in the sequel as well. Spider’s heritage and legacy will play a pivotal role in the sequel and the upcoming movies in the Avatar film series.
Avatar: The Way of the Water is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
