Young Kratos Comes to God of War’s Norse Realms with New Mod

With God of War finally available on the PC, it’s no surprise that the modding community has been having a field day with the 2018 hit PlayStation release. A new mod is out that allows players to take a trip down memory lane and witness Kratos’ younger version appear in the game. 

Kratos has undergone a massive makeover in the 20-year history of the franchise. In the PS2 and PS3-era games, he was shown in nothing but a Greek pattern embroidered kilt and the gauntlets which held the chains to the Blades of Chaos. In the 2018 God of War, Santa Monica was able to add age and more detail to Kratos’ character design. 

He now sports a full beard and some tactical armor pieces, such as a shoulder pauldron that would wrap around his torso. God of War Ragnarok seems to be carrying on the trend of the 2018 game, showing Kratos gearing up for the harsh climate resulting from the onset of Ragnarok. 

This new mod to the game brings back the original goatee and skirt, making it a nostalgic experience for fans of the previous era games. The mod was created by Omega Fantasy, who has uploaded a video of it in action – during the Baldur fight scene – and it looks pretty impressive in both gameplay and cutscenes. It should be noted that Omega Fantasy uses another mod that would hide Kratos’ shield and wrist armor, so players will only be able to see his bloody bandages. 

Cory Barlog, Director of God of War, has been in full support of mods ever since the game was announced for the PC. However, he stated that Santa Monica had created a challenging system to develop God of War, and adding built-in mod support would be very difficult. 

One of the exciting things the mod brings up is something fans of the franchise have been hoping for: God of War remakes with modern aesthetics. The way original Kratos has been depicted with the reboots graphics and gameplay gives us a glimpse of what could become some of the most ambitious remake projects ever. 

Until such an announcement is made, we will have to make do with mods to relive the good old days.

Before dying, Kratos’ second wife’s last wish is for her to be cremated at the highest peak of the nine realms. Therefore, with his son, Atreus, Kratos embarks on a difficult journey teeming with monsters and gods to fulfill his wife’s final request.
