Genshin Impact has been out for a while now and has been receiving a steady stream of updates from studio Mihoyo to add more content to the game. However, a recent tweet detailing a community challenge was deleted from the game’s official account. The challenge itself was pretty strange, and it described some ways it planned on involving Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
It’s not uncommon for Twitter accounts to giveaway rewards when they hit certain milestones. This would take the form of a prize if the account reaches a certain number of followers or a tweet achieves a certain number of retweets. The rewards for these are usually pretty grand too, such as a console or exclusive merchandise.
But, when Genshin Impact’s Twitter account ran a community challenge this week, the only thing offered to the followers was… nothing. The only person who would get anything would have been Elon Musk.
The game’s English account shared the challenge and various progression targets to celebrate reaching the 2 million follower mark. It seems they were going to use that to try and get more followers for its Ella Musk account. Ella Musk is a scholar within the world of Genshin Impact and also has her own Twitter account. Sadly, the follower count for Ella’s account is far less than that of Genshin’s main account.
So, it must have been Mihoyo’s plan to task the followers of its main account for what they considered to be worthwhile rewards. If Ella’s account hit a certain number follower-wise, it would result in different outcomes. If the account reached 500,000 followers, then Genshin’s official Twitter account would return to its original name, Paimon.
It seems normal enough, but after that, things took a turn for the strange. The following three milestones, one, three, and five million followers, respectively, are all related to Elon Musk.
Upon hitting the second milestone of one million followers, Genshin Impact would follow Elon Musk on Twitter. At three million, Mihoyo would invite Elon Musk to stream the game. At five million, Elon Musk would be invited to visit Mihoyo HQ. The last one would be quite an attractive prize for a fan if it had been the actual fan going on that tour and not Elon Musk.
This strange, and honestly terrible, community challenge received so much backlash that it has already been removed. We may never get an actual explanation behind the idea, aside from the apparent similarity between the name of the character, Ella Musk, and Elon Musk.
Considering Ella’s account is still at just 340343,000 followers, it may have been nothing more than a joke. The account’s followers surging past Genshin’s recent 2 million mark was a bit of a stretch, especially considering the only person to benefit from that would have been Elon Musk.
