In an unfortunate situation for EA and DICE, gameplay footage from Battlefield 2042’s first playtest leaked online yesterday. EA, armed with takedown notices, has been scrambling to get the footage taken down ever since.
The footage that first gained traction on Streamable also found its way to the PC Gaming subreddit, where it got over 7200 upvotes before EA successfully took it down. While this may be a win, it’s going to be quite a challenge for EA to contain the spread as images and excerpts from the footage are now all over the web.
This is not the first (or last) time that beta stage gameplay for a game has leaked online. But in the case of Battlefield 2042, it is surprising that it happened at all as each participant in the playtest signed an NDA before joining.
Additionally, all Battlefield 2042 gameplay is watermarked with a username and user ID. So, it will take no time for EA to find and ban the people who broke the NDA by leaking the footage.
The fact that testers are so excited by Battlefield 2042 that they’re acting foolhardy is something that bodes well for both developers and fans. But it’s important to note the game is still in beta and, thus, not the best version of itself.
This is why EA must get this leak under control ASAP, as footage from a not-so-perfect build may negatively affect public perception and dent the palpable excitement for the game.
That being said, there are a few things that are noteworthy about the current build of Battlefield 2042. Easy Anticheat, the very same anti-cheating software used by Apex Legends and Fortnite, was spotted in the beta and will most likely find a place in the final game as well. So, fans won’t have to worry about dealing with bots.
Yesterday, Battlefield debuted a short film titled Exodus on its YouTube channel, which set the stage for Battlefield 2042 and reintroduced a familiar face. Go on and click on the button below if you’d like to read all about it.
