The upcoming Shazam! sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, has reportedly begun filming. The sequel will be the fourteenth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
About three months ago, it was confirmed that Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) had joined the sequel’s cast, but not much had been revealed about her character. New set photos have leaked, and they give us the first look at Zegler in costume. She was spotted filming a scene in a golden superhero outfit.
Plot details haven’t been disclosed yet, but Shazam will reportedly take on Hespera and Kalypso, daughters of the Greek god Atlas. Atlas is one of the sources of Shazam’s powers. Shazam holds the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the strength of Hercules, the wisdom of Solomon, the speed of Mercury, and the courage of Achilles.
According to Murphy’s Multiverse, Zegler plays Anne, a classmate, and Freddy Freeman’s love interest.
Originally, there were theories that she might be part of Greek mythology’s Three Sisters/Witch Triad alongside Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, who are playing Hespera and Kalypso. Still, there’s no evidence to confirm this theory.
In the comics, the sisters are the three entities from the same goddess, Hecate. Individually, they are known as Cynthia, Mildred, and Mordred and manifest as three women of different ages.
If this rumor is true, Anne might be just a pseudonym that Zegler’s character uses to mask her identity at school.
Director David F. Sandberg recently shared a teaser video after leaked set photos revealed Shazam’s new costume. In the clip, Zachary Levi’s Shazam can be seen in a dark hallway with close-ups showing new parts of his costume.
The highly anticipated sequel will see the return of Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Zachary Levi as his adult alter ego Shazam. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
