Dropkick on My Devil!!! X has finished its run this September. The series has been quite popular among the masses. However, a recent announcement may potentially hamper the future of the series.
On Tuesday, Furano City’s Special Committee for the Examination of Settlement of Accounts denied the settlement of general accounts related to the Furusato Nozei (Hometown Tax) system.
In other words, they would not hand over the production money raised for the third season, which amounts to about 33 million yen(US $ 236,200).
The reason behind this decision is that the ninth episode of Dropkick on My Devil!!! X, set in Furano City, showed the main character Jashin-chan proposing to sell her organs to clear her debt.
The episode was deemed by a member of the Council as “socially unacceptable” and “displaying a bad image of Furano”. However, another committee member said that the episode was just a story and should not be taken in the wrong context.
The final decision was made by the chairman, because the votes were tied 7-7 from all committee members. Taketoshi Kita, the mayor of Furano, expressed his disappointment at the outcome, calling it an intervention against freedom of expression.
The third season of Dropkick on My Devil! was crowdfunded through various means, including the Furusato Nozei system, where urban taxpayers contribute to the rural areas in lieu of deduction from their taxes.
According to the Furano City Council, this is the first time in 17 years that a general account settlement was not approved. The production committee, however, plans to start a new crowdfunding campaign for the OVA episodes and a fourth season.
Black humor has been an inseparable part of the Dropkick on My Devil! series. While this decision by the Furano City Council is certainly disappointing, we do hope to see a fourth season in production soon.
