Despite being one of the most popular sports anime, The Prince of Tennis wasn’t available online for some time until earlier this year. After putting up the first 50 episodes of the anime, Funimation is about to add more and then some.
Funimation has already revealed its plans of putting up the whole franchise on their streaming service. This seems like a very good move considering the series’ loyal fanbase.
The first season of the anime has a total of 178 episodes. The fact that they are willing to release the sequels without the whole of first just goes on to show their belief in the old fans.
Funimation has announced that it will add 25 episodes (episode 51-75) of The Prince of Tennis, The Prince of Tennis II, The Prince of Tennis II OVAs, and The Prince of Tennis II OVA vs. Genius 10 on August 17, 2021.
With the rest of the first season, Funimation will also release the rest of the franchise, including The Prince of Tennis OVAs, The Prince of Tennis: Futari No Samurai, and The Prince of Tennis Best Games later this year.
The only exception to that is the upcoming Ryōma! Rebirth: The Prince of Tennis 3D CG movie, but knowing Funimation, they will also have the rights for that soon enough.
They are clearly planning on going all-in on the franchise, even offering subtitles in multiple languages, and are even planning on giving the series an English dub.
Now, even some new fans will experience Ryouma’s journey to becoming the very best, like no one ever was.
About The Prince of Tennis
The Prince of Tennis is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi.
An anime television series animated by Trans Arts, co-produced by Nihon Ad Systems and directed by Takayuki Hamana, was broadcast on TV Tokyo from October 10, 2001, to March 30, 2005, spanning a total of 178 episodes.
The story centers around Ryoma Echizen, son of the legendary “Samurai Nanjiro,” who retired very early from his professional tennis career despite his undeniable talent.
At age 12, Ryoma begins attending Seishun Academy Middle School in Tokyo, Japan, and joins its boys’ tennis team.
The title of the series comes from Ryoma’s title, “The Prince of Tennis,” after winning four tournaments back in America before the events of the manga.
