Constant encounters with licensing issues, regional restrictions and with other reasons for non-accessibility, it is annoying to experience these as an anime fan. Excluding the west, most parts of the world experience this problem, but Funimation is here to fix that!
Funimation initially began its expansion in English speaking countries. Beginning from the US, they expanded to the UK and then Australia and New Zealand, providing English subs and dubs to increase the medium’s popularity.
Last year they dabbled into Latin America, starting from Brazil and Mexico, providing Spanish dubs and subs. Now they are continuing their expansion.
Funimation has announced that its anime streaming platform will now be available in Chile, Colombia and Peru. The website is now available as a preview and full services are expected to begin in July.
It is no secret that anime is now more mainstream than it was ever before. Regardless of how one feels about this, a big reason for this was the existence of illegal streaming websites.
Because of legal ways of accessing anime being restricted to a few regions in the world, this was an acceptable practice.
While fans like to contribute to the industry, many fans from third world countries are unable to do so. Even in the west, this problem was reduced by the likes of Funimation and now they have taken a step in the right direction.
From their moves in Brazil and Mexico last year, it was inevitable something like this was going to happen soon.
It is certainly a matter of time when they move into other big areas in Europe and Asia; hopefully by then everyone would be able to stream their favorite shows without a hitch.
