We catch a glimpse of Sein’s past in episode 16 of ‘Sousou no Frieren’ titled “Long-lived Friends.” The party visits one of Frieren’s old friends, and Frieren gets to talk about the past.

Frieren is reminded of Himmel and her previous comrades once again, and she is also grateful for Voll. She leaves after promising to carry on Voll’s memory with her.

2. Episode 17 Speculation

The party has almost reached Auburn. However, the reason why Sein joined the party was to search for his friend, Gorilla. He finally has a lead on Gorilla’s location. He set off to Tur, which is far east of where the party is currently at.

The party was traveling to Auberst, which is in the opposite direction of Tur, so if Sein wants to find Gorilla, he will have to split up from the trio to go on his own journey. However, the four have grown much closer, and every adventurer party needs a priest. We will find out what Sein chooses.

3. Recap of episode 16

The party goes to visit Voll, a dwarf warrior friend of Frieren. Voll trips Stark immediately, saying carelessness costs a warrior his life. Frieren observes that his methods are still underhanded, but Voll welcomes the party. Frieren asks Stark to train with Voll while they are here.

Voll is happy to talk to Frieren while also training Stark. He commends Stark for being a quick learner and having improved relatively. Frieren is grateful to Voll because he is why she got to know Himmel and the previous party.

Voll asks Frieren if she still remembers Himmel’s face and his voice. Frieren is offended and tells Voll not to underestimate her. On the other hand, Voll does not remember his dead wife, but he continues to keep his promise and protect her village.

Voll wishes Frieren and her party could finally kill the dragon king. Frieren tries to tell him that Himmel, and her previous comrades have already slain the demon king but stops herself. She promises to keep Voll’s memory alive.

The party leaves, traveling further north while Sein goes around asking people about his friend. Sein’s friend goes by the moniker Gorilla Warrior, but nobody knows his real name. The party has almost reached Auberst but decides to take a break first.

Sein asks about his friend, and a villager tells him the ‘Stubborn Old Lady’ was close to him. The old lady refuses to share information for free and demands them to run small errands.

Her last task is to make them polish heroes’ statues. The old lady recognizes Sein by his nickname, Goatee Priest, and Sein is surprised. The statues they come across are of Kraft and a priest.

Sein is reminded of his past when he saw the same statue with his friend, who refused to be forgotten like Kraft and the priest. Sein’s friend decided on his moniker to become memorable, and Heiter named Sein the ‘Goatee Priest.’

Gorilla talked about Sein a lot during his stay with the old lady. Sein finally gets a lead from the old lady. Gorilla traveled to Tur, opposite Auberst, where the party was headed.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a manga by Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. It was launched in April 2020, and went on to win several prizes.

The story starts when a group of heroes come back home after defeating a demon. Frieren, an elf mage, has hundreds of years ahead of her due to her long lifespan.

She is destined to lose all her friends and comrades eventually. However, at the funeral of one of her past comrades, she realizes that she has a new adventure ahead of her.
