Fresh Prince Reboot Pushes Release Date To 2022 & Changes Showrunner

The Fresh Prince Reboot, which was announced by Will Smith last September, is inspired by Morgan Cooper’s viral short film. However, it has hit a few bumps along the way as the show has already changed two showrunners.

Original showrunner Chris Collins departed the series in December, and Diane Houston filled in as the second showrunner earlier this year. Now, THR reports that Houston has exited as well.
The third showrunner replacement comes with T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson. The writing duo was brought in under Houston and exec producer Malcolm Spellman. No cast members have been announced, and it’s unclear if any of the original cast members will return.

Peacock landed the reboot and has already given it a two-season order following bids from Netflix and HBO Max. The series was originally expected to drop this year but will see the light of day in 2022 instead.

Smith recently reunited with the family 30 years later for HBO Max’s Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special in November last year. Besides Smith, the special brought together the cast of the 1990s NBC comedy, including Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, Alfonso Ribeiro, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Smith’s Westbrook Media produced the reunion special, which will also be producing the upcoming Bel-Air reboot.

With a reimagined version of the beloved ’90s comedy, the reboot will dive deeper into the conflicts, emotions, and biases of what it means to be a Black man in America in current times while still maintaining the original show’s charm.
